Your Unpopular TV/Film opinions.
Re: Your Unpopular TV/Film opinions.
The other side of this is the burgeoning international market. Films have always traveled around a bit, but now Hollywood is marketing their biggest budget flicks to China, the EU, and the US all at almost the same time. And that kills a lot of nuance and cultural quirks, because you have to be able to localize the film quickly in a way varied cultures can easily access. All those great romcoms of the 80s? Almost dead. The biggest stars cost too much to cast and if you go for humor and subtlety you end up with something hard to translate. Whereas with Transformers you have an expensive, hot mess of action. People can just ogle he expensive CGI and explosions.

It's hard to gauge the "level of unoriginality" and compare it to other eras. For example, the studio system and block booking were not exactly big promoters of originality. The studies cranked remakes, actor vehicles and book adaptations non-stop back then.

Sequelitis is bad now? At least we didn't just get 11 freaking Aldrich family flicks in five years. But I could go for another Joe Palooka or Michael Shayne flick. Shoot, how many Dr. Kildares we got out now? Screw this, I need some Rin Tin Tins, with maybe an Andy Hardy crossover. Or some racist Charlie Chan.

This is very true.
We're at an age where adults are nostalgic of what were the first blockbusters, so of course those are going to return in the guise of modern blockbusters.
Some work better than others. And while I admit to rolling my eyes every time I hear of a reboot that doesn't really need to exist I'll still judge them all on their own merits.
I've also come to terms that I'm simply not the target audience for some of them even if I love the originals and I just don't go see them. It's no skin off my back.

When I said good movies are still being made outside Hollywood, I didn't mean in the USA. European, Asian, and even Indian films were what I'm talking about.

Star Wars isn't Sci Fi. It's fantasy in a space setting. Sci Fi has some logic or fake science in it. Star Trek is sci fi. Star Wars has far more in common with Lord of the Rings than anything else. Why I never got the Star Wars vs Star Trek debates and comparisons.
