Yesterday I finally managed to mod my Mega Drive with language and 50/60 Hz switches using mmonkey's guide. It was the first time I did anthing like it and I'm very proud of the result. So now it's the turn of one of my SNESes. However I have a few questions before I start.
I will be modding a PAL SNES and I will NOT enlarge the cart slot to accept US carts and I have no Japanese carts anyway. So, is there any point in disabling the region chip? Or should I just do the 50/60 Hz mod? Will games still run in 60 Hz if the region chip is not disabled?

Re: Question about modding a SNES
Why not just buy a NTSC U.S. snes and do the mods on that, which would allow you to take jp and us carts as well as pal.

The US SNES looks disgusting though.chipperkwah wrote:Why not just buy a NTSC U.S. snes and do the mods on that, which would allow you to take jp and us carts as well as pal.
To OP you should just do the 60hz mod. It's well worth it. Some games have issues with it but you don't need to do the region mod as well.
You can do the region mod to enable you to play Super Famicom games (they're identical to PAL games, it's just the region lockout preventing you from playing them). You will need to mod the cartridge slot to play the ugly NTSC cartridges.

Yeah, I always thought the first model US SNES was horrible looking. I much prefer the Famicom version and the SNES2.

Re: Question about modding a SNES
Thanks everybody.
I am not buying an NTSC SNES because it's terrifyingly ugly. The few US games I have work well with an adapter or on the RetroDuo. Mostly I am interested in the mod to play PAL games at 60 Hz and full screen. The mod made a huge difference to my Megadrive so I can't wait to give my SNES the same treatment.
