I decided to do a modchip, and install homebrew...

I know most of you will wonder why not just softmii it , I don't know. I feel the homebrew channel is much safer, and I do not have to downgrade for that. I am afraid the softmii really misses this thing up.

What worries me is if the chip and the homebrew channel do not work well together

Well am not sure
Would you suggest something?

There is a local place where he will do the installing for me, so am not sure.
It is very important though that it would play gamecube backups.
I hear all modchips do the same thing any way

Well, it's not quite that simple. If you have a D2C chipset Wii you need a specific model modchip like the D2Ckey. The new Wiikey will work with all Wiis except D2C Wii's. It offers the most compatibility and allows booting of GC backups as well.

Modchips only allow booting of backups and homebrew through DVD media. They don't enable Homebrew Channel or anything like that, for that you need to perform the twilight hack and install THC that way.

Drivekey is solderless and very easy to install, however it has drawbacks in that it can't be upgraded and it limits the drive speed to 2x which will cause compatibility problems with some games. SSBB won't play on this kind of mod, however it will play with the movies stuttering on a softmii modded system.

Softmii suffers from the same limits all softmods do, it's easier for Nintendo to detect system modification if they choose to do so when playing on WFC, if you upgrade you lose the mod, there's always a chance that your Wii could be bricked if you experience power failure or something similar.

So there's advantages and disadvantages to all the possible solutions. Modding a Wii is pretty hit and miss with how it works. Since using a modchip does not enable unsigned code to run unlike the twilight hack/softmii mods do.

The most limited option is the Drivekey, but it is also the easiest so it's up to you whether you want the less risk/easier option or want the more risky but more useful hard mod option.

this is more complex than I thought it is...

I got how the homebrew stuff works though...

now wondering about the modchips, I guess the D2C is my best choice

If you are definitely getting a modchip for your wii you need to find out what version chipset it is using and get a compatible modchip.
