Thinkin' of Buyin'

Post by Radiant Hero »

I might get the Dungeons and Dragons Collection for the Sega Saturn. On the fence at the moment. Anyone remember playing Shadow Over Mystara? It was a fun game back in the day. Wonder how well it's held up.
I don't play games, I experience them.

Mystaria... you mean an early Shining Force-esque RPG for the Saturn? I have something by that title, but it's nothing at all to get excited over. (Of course I don't know whether we're talking about the same game or not.)

I've heard Dungeons and Dragons collection is cool, but nothing to lose one's composure over (the webmaster of www.videogamecritic.net posted a review for it a few years ago). I might suggest the same thing to the guy who recently posted about splurging for Panzer Dragoon Saga... namely to get a modded Saturn instead.

They ported both D&D arcade games to Saturn. The Tower of Doom you can play straight, but Mystara requires the 4 MEG RAM cart. And indeed, they are awesome ports.

They've both held up fairly well. Those games are what got me to start thinking about building a MAME cab in a couple years (when I have more than a small one-bedroom apartment).

They are both good games, however they are Japanese only brawler rpgs. There is Japanese text but the game is quite playable without a guide - though you may want to read one to figure out the controls and combos.

I so want to play Tower of Doom again now.

I have never tried to play an rpg in a language I don't know. How does that work out?

They're not RPGs. They are D&D-based beat-em-ups. There are branching paths, though, and various items you can use. If you are a magical character you use spells similarly to items. You also get experience and go up levels. It's a very interesting implementation of things.

As I recall from the arcade, the only relevant text is when you select your paths when you get a branch. And those are really easy to look up on GameFAQs ahead of time.
