Nintendo Handheld Gaming Thread (Game Boy to DS)

EE: They are, not that I paid a chunk for them. I was patient and luck worked in my favor. FF1, 4 and 6 were like $15-20 a piece locally at a half price of all places. Metroid Fusion was local too, $20-25 for that one and Golden Sun was $20 last year. The two most expensive there were the sealed copy of FF5 I still have yet to unwrap which was like $40 on a forum, and F-Zero slid by on ebay somehow, paid the same which blew me away as it's that much on a good day loose. Also that FF Adventure game is complete in there with the map, shipped to me in that plastic protector so I left it on there.

The real chunk of change is in the center of that first game pile. That's not a repro but a legit copy of Trip World. Amazing game, saddens me it goes for so much money as people are missing out.

GTA Advance is solid oddly enough. It's a top down 3D world with all the action as 2D sprites. It basically handles/plays like GTA3 in overhead camera view. It's a very solid and fairly challenging little game with lots to do for a long time with it much like the console titles.

This is why I created this thread. Your games give me good inspiration. I've got Final Fantasy 5 and Metroid Fusion loose and paid about half the going rate for them years ago. In fact, I'm playing through FF right now. My previous save file was corrupted, but the way I played it was also corrupted and I'm doing better at it now.

I've got nearly 10 boxed GBA games myself (not all complete, though) One is still sealed, it's known as the Racing 4 Pack which has the 3 GT Advance racing games (one of which I saw in your pics) and Moto GP. My best complete/boxed title outside of the Pinball Challenge Deluxe I mentioned a while back has to be WarioWare Twisted, got that for less than $20 on eBay back in the day (I'd like to say roughly $15), but a close second was Mario Golf Advance Tour for $4 boxed & complete.

A month ago or so I had a complete Macross GBA with the little toy in there, but I just never used it so I passed it along. I'm half tempted to do that with FF5 but seems like more effort than it is worth to swap it out for a minty CIB one. I keep intending to play it, but then stuff happens that puts it on the back burner so it bugs me. Kind of doesn't matter to me if I rip it open it or not as I paid the CIB rate for that sealed.

I haven't kept up with this thread 100%, only peeked in every so often. I've only noticed talk about games, but haven't seen any talk about hardware. So...

The brick is my original GB from (I'm guessing) 93 or 94. I got the Tetris bundle, like most people. It still works, it just needs a little TLC. I never intend to use a non-lit screen ever again so I don't know if I'll ever get around to fixing it up. I was thinking about doing a back light mod to it, but I don't know since...

I just got a GB Boy Colour. This thing is surprisingly awesome for a Chinese clone console! I know the screen stretches the image, but it's only slightly. Not nearly as drastic as stretching 4:3 to 16:9, I hardly notice with most games. The viewing angles aren't as great as real Nintendo handhelds, but it's not bad. Outside of that, the screen looks amazing. And surprisingly all the buttons feel great, even the D-Pad. And they cloned the hardware close enough that my Everdrive GB works perfectly.

The Indigo GBA has an AGS-101 screen in it. I'm considering putting one in the translucent GBA as well (it has the stock screen still) since the AGS-101 screens are plentiful right now, but they're not cheap.

I don't know how I ended up with four SP's. They're all front lit, which I don't mind so much, but I've been thinking about getting a back lit SP. I kind of want to keep them all because I love all the colors, but realistically I'm gonna part with two of them (or 3 if I get a back lit SP). I just can't decide which colors to keep!

I have a translucent purple GBC that I don't know where I got it from. Probably a thrift store. It needs some minor repairs (easy fixes) but I never get around to it because of the unlit screen. Back light mods are impossible, but front light mods exist. But I'm not sure why I would want to front light mod it when I have a back lit GBA and GB Boy Colour. So, it just sits in the pile of stuff I need to fix/refurbish one day.

I have a first gen DS but it doesn't get much use. If I'm gonna play a DS game, I'll usually do it on my 3DS XL. And I don't like using a DS for GBA gaming because of the awkward A and B button placement. It's very uncomfortable in my opinion.

Playing GBA on the DS is far better for me. I got an SP but I like the screen, the wider controls and of course the stereo sound built in.

I'll have to post my Nintendoi handheld coillection later. A good number of them are quite beaten up though, one day I'll get around to refurbishing them in some way.

I'm very interested in this purchase. But it's pretty expensive. I don't have the chops to do it myself if I buy everything separately. I have to muster up the willingness to spend $235 for what I believe is the best modded GBA I have ever seen.

Like I said my list of stuff can change but isn't very likely, yet on Sunday it did. I made the image small but clicks can grow it up to full size. Got this all for $70, which in itself at first glance with the GB and 3 Pokemon titles is nice (which I've put new batteries into already.)

The keeper in there is something I've wanted for a very very long time but price stopped me - Mega Man V. Finally!


By the way nice little hardware collection posted up there earlier. I guess I'm nuts, but I am perfectly fine with the SP's standard lighting too. I've got that NES SP as it is and it does the job, but I'd hate to think I'd ding up something produced in such small numbers so I do keep an eye out casually for a normal cheap sparkling pretty SP as a pocketable one anywhere (kind of like how I have a 2nd beater GB Micro.)

I'd love to have a normal GBA with a 101 in it again, but I broke one already due to poor tooling on the clamshell so I'm not going to bother plus 101 screens are expensive. It's actually cheaper unless you find a dumper deal just to pay around $100 (but not really north of it) for a done up on on ebay already for you.

So I mentioned yesterday I wanted that super modded GBA. Ultimately I couldn't justify the price of the unit. I weighed the pros and cons between that and a DS Lite, based on my specific needs, and went for the latter at half the price for a manufacturer refurbished model in Mario Red. Don't get me wrong, having a modded OG GBA would be awesome, but I couldn't rationalize the price.

I haven't handled a Lite in awhile but I forgot how great it feels in the hands. Easily my favorite model of the DS line with the DSi XL as a close second. I mentioned in another thread that the DS Lite is my preferred method for playing GBA games and that still stands.

I'm almost in total agreement if it was not for one solitary thing -- DSLite is a no go with GB+GBC stuff. 100% Deal Breaker for me.

Sadly the reality is a modded GBA with a 101 slapped into it is going to set ya back around $100. Given what a 101 goes for even jacked up to gut a screen from, then the cost of the parts for the mod, and of course the original GBA unit -- it's not worth doing it yourself if you don't pay some douche like thegodofgaming on ebay nearly $200 for one because of his lame flashy ads selling like 20+ of them at a time.
