So what have you guys been watching lately?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I just recently finished/caught up with two series: Legend of Korra and American Horror Story.

Overall, I'd say Legend of Korra was pretty excellent. I'd been waiting for the last season of Korra to show up on Amazon Prime, but the recent release of the complete series of blu-ray convinced me to just buy the whole shebang. I don't know if I'd say it was worth the year+ wait, but I can say that I don't regret my purchase. The final season wasn't quite as good as the third, but it was pretty darn close. If the series wasn't bogged down by the sloggish second season, I suspect I'd enjoy it more than the original Avatar series. But even then, it's still really close.

I'm looking forward to the sequel comic coming out later this year.

American Horror Story is a completely different beast. I started watching it from the beginning earlier this year. I love that 'each season is its own separate story' format and for the most part, I enjoyed each story for what it is. But I can't say I enjoy each season for the same reasons. For instance, I enjoyed the characters in the second season the most, but I also didn't like that season's tendency to used recycled horror tropes or the fact that it seemed to have so many plot lines going on at once (Though I'll give them kudos for wrapping them all up in the end). I also liked the themes going on in season four, but was also completely mystified by the motivations of most of the characters.

I think it's a fun 'turn your brain off' and watch kind of show, but I found in some instances that if I stop and think about it too hard I loose some of the enjoyment. I'm kind of looking forward to season six, but I'm not in a rush to watch it or anything.

American horror story is something I need to binge, Pronto. I like the first 2 seasons and just stopped watching with the intention of actually catching up but never following through.

The first three episodes of "Fire Island" on Logo. It's about a group of gay men who rent a house on Fire Island and we follow their trials and exploits every weekend (apparently they only stay on Fire Island on the weekends).

And the guys are HAWT!

What?! It's like Cake says...

my wife wants to watch Riverdale, but right now it's just like episodes 9, 10 and 12 available On Demand (Comcast). Anyone know if the series itself is available to stream elsewhere?

Well not streaming per se, but the whole first season is on sale on Xbox one right now. I thinks it 20.

Interesting... Hmm. Though I feel like if I pay $20 for that then it'll just end up on Hulu next week and I'll be pissed.

I've been watching Avatar: The Last Airbender with my kids. We just started season 2 last night. I'm afraid that during the height of this program's popularity I had mistakenly written it off as yet another half-baked anime inspired show cashing in on recycled ideas. Turn's out this show is fantastic! Our whole family has been digging it, including my wife which is no small feat (her interest in animation tends to begin and end with Disney/Dreamworks). I've even caught myself pouting a bit when my kids watch it without me, lol. It's been really fun discovering something new and cool together (as opposed to something like Star Wars where I'm more the custodian of their discovery experience having fore-knowledge of the relevant story beats). Any hoo, I'm quite certain this is another example of me being "the last one to know," but if you enjoy epic 'hero's journey' type fantasy, kung-fu movies, or fiction informed by eastern philosophy, this show is amaze-balls. Recommended.

Aye, Avatar was surprisingly good. Legend of Korra is as well. The live action adaptation...not so much.

Good to know about the live action movie! I'd sort of been considering it. Legend of Korra on the other hand has definitely risen up on the list of what to watch next.

And the nice thing about Avatar and Korra is that they are continued on in comic books. So if you find yourself really wanting to continue with the stories, you've got something already printed and waiting for you.
