RB Community List: 30 Best Retro Gaming Compilations

Just a thought too...... If we're gonna end up "ranking" these, wouldn't comps dedicated to a single company or system generally trump those dedicated to a specific series? "Objectively" speaking, at least. Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, Capcom Classics Collection Vol 1, and so on have something for everyone, while, say, the Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection would only appeal to fans of one specific franchise.

The initial idea wasn't to vote/rank because of how diverse and broad the subject is to start. I don't think any of the other guides did ranking and I know the other "shelf" threads were built on the community honing in on an agreed upon list.

I do think, as you described, there are a lot of inherent sublists here, so maybe we do branching articles.

I do want to focus on quality/uniqueness over quantity also.

First post is updated with all nominations that have. Even detailed out. I do want to list out the Atari and Activisin sets when I'm not on phone.

Metal Slug Anthology features Metal Slug 1, 2, x, 3, 4, 5 and 6 and is awesome.

Another is the Heroes of Might & Magic Complete Collection
It has:

HOMM 1- 5 and all 7 expansions
A great package for a classic PC series

Are these PC collections tied to a key? Their accessibility is a sticking point since they can be grabbed drm free via GOG.

I wish I'd been able to pick up more of those Konami compilations. I made the mistake of picking Vol. 3, but I should have gone with the one with Castlevania: Belmont's Revenge for sure.

Didn't see it in the OP but Namco Museum Virtual Arcade for the 360 is my second favorite compilation. It's a little on the uncommon side so maybe some people don't have it, but it deserves to be there I think.

Mega Man Anniversary Collection I think is worthy as well.

My vote would "ultimately" be for Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection as well.

Actually, the newer Doom Classic Complete Collection would be the way to go here.

Over 100 levels. Definitely an awesome package.
