RB Community List: 30 Best Retro Gaming Compilations
In a similar spirit to these threads from a couple years back, and with an eye towards forum-driven content for the main page, I thought this would be a fun list-a-mania of sorts.
Here is my first pass at the rules:
- Target the definitive version when it comes to performance/sampling of titles
- Multiple comps for the same system/genre are ok if duplication is nearly non-existent when it comes to games
- These are the must-haves you want for your game shelf. The best of the best here.
Posting rules:
One nomination per post, with a brief outline of why you would include it and provide a list of games included. We'll debate within the thread (check out the Summer Game challenge for an example) and carve out the 30 best.
Nominations:
1) Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection (PS3, Xbox360)

Re: RB Community List: 30 Best Retro Gaming Compilations
Great thread idea. I love these and have a bunch. Gonna have to look into specifics later before I can comment.
Re: RB Community List: 30 Best Retro Gaming Compilations
This list definitely needs Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection on the PS3/Xbox 360.
It's more comprehensive than the Genesis Collection featured on the PS2 (49 total games versus 33) and also features some unlockable Master System and Arcade games. Everything runs great.
Genesis:
Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
Alien Storm
Altered Beast
Beyond Oasis
Bonanza Bros.
Columns
Comix Zone
Decap Attack
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
Dynamite Headdy
Ecco the Dolphin
Ecco: The Tides of Time
ESWAT: City Under Siege
Fatal Labyrinth
Flicky
Gain Ground
Golden Axe
Golden Axe II
Golden Axe III
Kid Chameleon
Phantasy Star II
Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom
Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium
Ristar
Shining Force
Shining Force II
Shining in the Darkness
Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
Sonic & Knuckles
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Sonic 3D Blast
Sonic Spinball
Streets of Rage
Streets of Rage 2
Streets of Rage 3
Super Thunder Blade
Vectorman
Vectorman 2
Master System:
Golden Axe Warrior
Phantasy Star
Arcade:
Alien Syndrome
Altered Beast
Congo Bongo
Fantasy Zone
Shinobi
Space Harrier
Zaxxon

Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection gets an easy yes vote from me. Top tier and a step above the PS2/PSP Sega comps.
I love the two SMS unlockables too.

Re: RB Community List: 30 Best Retro Gaming Compilations
I'm going to nominate Rare Replay (Xbox One). Yes, there are some major Rare games missing due to obvious licensing issues (Golden Eye, Donkey Kong Country/64 games, Diddy Kong Racing), but this is the lone spot to play most of these games on anything outside of their original hardware. And it spans their entire history, going back to their original Ultimate Play the Game days (yes, it's a terribly awkward company name).
On top of that, you get their entire 360 catalog as part of the compilation. Within the game, they have special bonus videos, and each game has a separate NG+ for mini-challenges to test your mettle. And there is a rewind feature.
ZX Spectrum
Jetpac
Lunar Jetman
Atic Atac
Sabre Wulf
Underwurlde
Knight Lore
Gunfright
NES
Slalom
R.C. Pro-Am
Cobra Triangle
Snake Rattle 'n' Roll
Solar Jetman
Digger T. Rock
Battletoads
R.C. Pro-Am II
Arcade
Battletoads Arcade
N64
Killer Instinct Gold
Blast Corps
Banjo-Kazooie (XBLA remaster)
Jet Force Gemini
Perfect Dark (XBLA remaster)
Banjo-Tooie (XBLA remaster)
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Gamecube
Grabbed by the Ghoulies
Xbox 360 (full games on disc)
Kameo
Perfect Dark Zero
Viva Piñata
Jetpac Refuelled (XBLA game)
Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise
Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts

Re: RB Community List: 30 Best Retro Gaming Compilations
I loved the top 30 Gamecube thread, because some of my games made it there
But most of you know I enjoy consuming these retro compilations and even though I haven't played them all, it's fun to see what's in them, who developed them, etc.
Capcom's collections are solid, as is that ultimate Sega collection for the 7th gen consoles.
I'd like to suggest the first Taito Legends. A very solid collection featuring:
Arkanoid and Chase HQ could not be on this, because according to Empire Interactive (the devs), there was a pending lawsuit/issues with Atari & Breakout on the former, and car licensing issues on the latter. But for what it's missing, it still features a few rare titles that were only available in Japan such as Plump Pop. I got to play a lot of these in the arcades and it was nice to see them here. I'd also go with the second one but the PS2 and PC (Xbox in EU only) versions have different games, due to porting issues.

I'll put in for the Mega Man Anniversary Collection on PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube.
It also has an assortment of extra content like concept art, remix tracks, even the pilot episode of the Mega Man cartoon.

Re: RB Community List: 30 Best Retro Gaming Compilations
Data East Arcade Classics for Wii. The only Data East compilation out there. Essential arcade action. Includes:
Bad Dudes Vs. DragonNinja
Bump 'n' Jump
BurgerTime
Caveman Ninja
Express Raider
Heavy Barrel
Lock 'n' Chase
Magical Drop III
Peter Pepper's Ice Cream Factory
Side Pocket
Sly Spy
Street Hoop
SRD: Super Real Darwin
Two Crude
Wizard Fire
As for Atari, the recently-released Atari Vault (PC) is perhaps the best. It's a great mix of classic 2600 and arcade games, with customizable controls. Includes:
Next up, Intellivision Lives!. The DS version. Why DS? Well, compared to the other variations of Intellivision Lives! it has the best selection of games (it varies a bit from platform to platform), as well as the best emulation of the Intellivision gamepad. Includes:
(Sorry for the lack of alphabetical order, the compilation has the games split and listed across genre categories. Also note that the two D&D games are on there, but names have been changed for licensing purposes.)
I have tons more picks, but I wanna give others a chance.

Re: RB Community List: 30 Best Retro Gaming Compilations
I love these. I'll keep an eye on this thread. In general, yeah Capcom and Sega collections tend to be awesome.
I need to get Midway Arcade Treasures 1-2. I got volume 3 for San Francisco Rush and 2049. Was sad to see that they had a horrible time emulating the original Rush though and it suffers from severe audio issues. I'm also not sure if these games save data like their console ports, since these are the arcade versions. Not sure. Also kind of a shame Rush 2 was an N64 exclusive, it would have been nice to get more versions of that elsewhere.
