That's an excellent list of criteria. Might prove a little nebulous trying to figure out how many copies a game sold though. I've heard VGChartz is full of lies for example.
Well, yeah, and 80% or better where? GameFAQS? MetaCritic? It's not anything you can lock in stone, but it does help get us away from arguing whether something is a classic or not, because I'm already seeing lots of issues with that :D

You know, most console makers did have a Greatest Hits re-release thing. If it was re-released in greatest hits packaging it's probably pretty safe that it sold well, or at least well enough.

None of that criteria is particularly helpful unless you're looking at modern games.

How am I supposed to find sales figures, scores, and so on for an Atari game or early NES title?

It's really going to depend on the game. And you're right. Any criteria we choose presents challenges, be it lack of information or arbitrariness. Take your pick.

I really don't think so...

The vast majority of the games that I said "nah" too are games that typically did not sell well, are not well-known, or are just demonstrably poor quality games. Some are all of these things. Almost all of them have much better (and better known) expressions of the same/similar ideas within their genre, on their platform, and/or from their era.

That said, I am willing to entertain reasonable arguments about why games should come off the wall of shame. Those arguments should include sales figures, well-resepected "best of" rankings, demonstrable influence of the game, etc. I provided those for my picks and stand by them. I can be sympathetic to others who believe they can do the same for the wall of shame games.
Wild Arms 3 could be a classic, I think you were overly harsh on it.

I think playing the Turok HD re-make/re-skin should count as well.

So, I tried this before and didnt get far, but with my retro stuff being more accessible and ignored some lately, I want to make a crack at it.

1. Castlevania - NES
2. Illusion of Gaia - SNES
3. Gunstar Heroes - Genesis
4. Dragon Force - Saturn
5. I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream - PC
6. Shinobi III - Genesis
7. Lufia - SNES

8, 9, and 10 will be from the Jabberwocky challenge, regardless if classics or not.

It will be 3 of the following:
Turtles 1 NES
Robocop vs Terminator - Genesis
Contra III - SNES
Desert/Jungle/Urban Strike - Genesis
Game from Super Star Wars - SNES
Battletech - Genesis
Demon's Crest - SNES
Fatal Labyrinth

1. Castlevania - NES = Classic
2. Illusion of Gaia - SNES = Classic (and underrated around here IMO)
3. Gunstar Heroes - Genesis = Classic
4. Dragon Force - Saturn = I defer
5. I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream - PC = Cult Classic, sorry.
6. Shinobi III - Genesis = Classic
7. Lufia - SNES = Lufia 2 is the classic, Lufia 1 really isn't I'm afraid.
Turtles 1 NES = Classic
Robocop vs Terminator - Genesis = Not a classic
Contra III - SNES = Classic
Desert/Jungle/Urban Strike - Genesis = Desert Strike is a classic, none of its sequels are.
Game from Super Star Wars - SNES = All good games, none of them legit classics.
Battletech - Genesis = Not a classic, pretty hard game though.
Demon's Crest - SNES = SHOULD BE A CLASSIC but it's still relatively obscure. Awesome game regardless!
Fatal Labyrinth = Some consider this a classic in roguelike communities, because it's arguably the very first console based roguelike. But it's not a classic in the broad sense. A very well made roguelike though, and hard as hell. I've never beaten it, sad to say.

I'd give a yes to Fatal Labyrinth for being (I believe) the first Japanese roguelike.

The first Mystery Dungeon would also be acceptable.

I was struggling to find a classic PC game that either I hadn't beat or isn't incredibly long. I Have No Mouth seemed like the best choice.

Other options:
Broken Sword: Remastered
D&D Gold Box Game (Have them all on gog)
Darklands
Dragon Wars
Legacy of Kain Soulreaver (seems borderline)
Pirates! (Love this game, had many good game endings, but how to consider it beat? Achieve all 10 goals?)
Planescape: Torment EE (played but didn't finish the original)
Wasteland

I am proud to have written the lowest score review of Illusion of Gaia on GameFAQS. Not proud of how much editing it still needs, though.

Darklands = Classic.
Dragon Wars = I defer.
Legacy of Kain Soulreaver (seems borderline) = Reviewed well and sold well, is fun, a classic.
Pirates! (Love this game, had many good game endings, but how to consider it beat? Achieve all 10 goals?) = I defer.
Planescape: Torment EE (played but didn't finish the original) = The original is a classic, so EE is by proxy right?
Wasteland = A classic, and the best game in this list.
