Re: Summer Games Challenge 2017 - Time to decide your games!
I envy the handful of people in this thread that need to play Super Metroid.

I'm unfamiliar with some of those PC titles, but those console selections........ aren't that bad!
What do you mean by "Ultima VII" exactly though? Both parts + both expansions?!

Day of the Tentacle is the sequel to Maniac Mansion and marks the first time Dave Grossman and Tim Schafer were the lead devs. It's often rated as one of the best Adventure games of all time, if not one of the best games.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I'm unfamiliar with some of those PC titles, but those console selections........ aren't that bad!

Under a Killing Moon is probably the most famous of all of the Tex Murphy games and is also often rated as one of the best Adventure games of all time.
The Last Express is also an adventure game notable for operating in real time and offering multiple story paths based on the player's actions. It received numerous awards and accolades upon release, though the game initially performed poorly commercially. The game is also famous for its art nouveau style, done via rotoscoping.

Day of the Tentacle is on my list this year, and I am really looking forward to it. I also have a copy of The Last Express on my iPad, but Under a Killing Moon remains a PC exclusive.

WALL OF SHAME 2017: YOUZE SHEEPLE SHOULD BE ASHAMED!!!
Well, well, well, my aging hipster friends: I see you have made many a poor selection once again this year and have gone seemingly out of your way to disrespect the sweet memory of our dearly departed Snickerd00dle. A bunch of uncouth "gamers" the lot of ya!
If these games are on your list, get them off. They have no place in this holy ritual, and they only serve to further besmirch both your own reputation and that of our community:
---------------------------------
Bloody Wolf = the only thing "classic" about this pick is the faulty logic employed that "old =classic". This is not one of the best games in its genre, or by Data East, or on the TG16, or that has been ported elsewhere. It was a middling title at best in its own time and has no business in this discussion.
Kung-Fu Master= Fuck no. Everything I said above about Bloody Wolf applies, except this game has even fewer redeeming qualities.
Soleil = This version of the title sounds especially Frenchy and is thus a better fit than the English version "Crusader of Centy" because this game is a pretentious slog. It is neither a classic nor well-known/well-loved game on its own damn console. I am sure there is some vastly superior Zelda game you haven't yet played that you could do instead. This was boring then and irresponsible to list it as a "classic" now.
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes = Play this if you want to see the degree to which a genuine classic can be fucked over by a remake. Don't play it if you want to hold true to the INNATE VALUES of Snickerd00dle's challenge. This gets a twin pair of "fuck no" from me.
Star Wars Republic Commando - This is a "B grade" Star Wars game at best. There are far better games connected to the franchise you could play, as well as better games in the genre, of the era, etc. Not a bad game, but neither is it arguably a "classic". I dunno, though, whoever listed this probably thinks of The Phantom Menace as a classic, too.
Turok Dinosaur Hunter -ok... HD = nope. The only thing the original Turok really had going for it was how "classicly" it demonstrated the limitations of the shitty FPS machine that was the N64. Play the N64 version if you want to include it so that you can struggle with the horrendous fog and the shit controls. The HD version cannot make the cut (unless you turn the fog on and play with a N64 controller via USB).
Goemon whatever games = Goefuckyerself with this esoteric hipster BS. No one knows about the Mystical Ninja games and those who do know that they aren't that good really. Classics they are not, "cult" classics perhaps - AT BEST!
Dragon Slayer: Legend of Heroes II = Do you wax up your mustache while you sit around thinking up this shit? Obscure series mostly popular on an obscure console = classic? Puhlease.
Umihara stuff = are you trying to just fuck with me now? Like, did you try to pick some of the weirdest and most obscure Japanese games and label them "classic" just to see what I'd say? "Piss off with this fish photography nonsense" is what I say. You could make a better argument for Seaman, which in its own right would still have no business on this list.
Batman: The Video Game = Again, we have conflated "old" with "classic". This mistake is often compounded, as in this instance, when we also add in "superhero" or some other beloved IP. This game is not one of the better games featuring Batman, is not one of the better sidescrolling action games on the NES, and has no merit to be included here.
Beetle Adventure Racing! = lolololololololololololololololol!
Tales of Destiny = nope. This is a mediocre entry in a mediocre series, so unless you want to play something "classicly mediocre" there's no reason to include this on your list given the much better RPGs of its era.
Code of Princess, Metroid Prime: Federation Force, Super Robot Wars V = Flake, just go play these games for fun - don't include them as part of this challenge as none of them can even arguably rise to the level of "classic". Maybe in ten years one of these games will be considered "classic" (if someone uncovers a well-hidden and actually good game buried in some of their code), but for now it seems you are just having a laugh...right?
Clash at Demonhead = The only thing classic about this old plodder is my seemingly-annual poo-pooing of it. Has anyone even ever heard of this only semi-interesting turd of game that isn't already a HUGE retro gaming nerd? No? Then it likely isn't a classic by any measure.
Landstalker = see what I wrote about Soiled up above? That applies almost doubly for Landwalker.
Mega Man 64 = Do you have access to a PS1, PS2, or PS3? Good. you should not play the game on those, instead. I don't know why anyone loves these MM abominations - with a few exceptions, they were generally poorly received in their day and have only gotten worse with time. A cult classic at best, but it is the worst.
Eternal Darkness Sanity's Requiem = This is a good cult classic, but - again - there are way better choices to play in the genre, on the platform, and in the era that more people than just those who who collect old GameCube games would know about. Play one of those instead, and drop this esoteric BS.
Exile = This game should be exiled from any list of classics. Being old & well-regarded do not a "classic" make. Be gone!
Koudelka = I have never heard of this and I wrote a book about video games. Hipster and/or otaku nonsense, I am sure.
Syberia = This one is a borderline pick, at best. Have you somehow managed to play all the better games in this genre?
Actraiser 2. = Fuck you.
Equinox = Mediocrity thy name is Equinox. You realize that the SNES has many outstanding titles, right? Jim at Gamestop won't really fall in love with you because you know something about its also-ran titles.
Balloon Kid = mediocrity in monochrome is still mediocrity. Not a classic by any measure, really.
Billy Hatcher and The Giant Egg = This game is a classic reminder of how much Sega sucked in the early 2000s. Do you know why this game hasn't had lots of sequels? Because it sucks (eggs). Get it off yer list.
Feel the Magic: XY/XX = How about "Project: Rub This One Off Your List and Pick Something Better"? Christ, even IGN scored this one below an 8.
Little Nemo = Nope. Old + sorta rare/expensive + reasonably good ≠ classic. If you want to stick with the Capcom theme, I can see the argument I suppose...but not every NES Capcom game should be considered "Classic" by default (not even Disney ones)
Dark Cloud = See my comments for Soiree above. Dark Clod was an ugly launch game that tried too hard and failed even harder.
Wild Arms 3 = I feel like, as is the case with many other picks on this list, this is a B-level game that you should play if you love the genre but have no business putting on a list of classics. Pick again.
Rebelstar: Tactical Command = I know why it is famous in certain circles and generally well regarded....but it is an obscure title that is certainly not a classic. There are like 25 X-Com games that can more reasonably be argued to fit the "classic" tag...go pick one of them instead.
Yu-No = You should know better. If this were "Snickerd00dle's Summer Challenge of Hentai-Inflected Games that are Actually Good but Sold Poorly" than you'd have an argument. It isn't/
Aquaria = too new. also, wtf?
Dead Island = I remember playing this way back when that classic movie Transformers: Dark of the Moon was out and people were listenting to classic artists like Bon Iver and Kanye West. Ah, the days when people hotly anticipated new seasons of that TV classic Game of Thrones! A great nostalgia pick, for sure! Or not.
Deep Blue = are you trying to pick one of the most boring and obscure games on a console that is bursting with a shit ton of bonafide classics in the genre? This pick is off the deep end...you really blue it...
Everblue 2 = are you sure you aren't just Flake reposting a list of trollbait?
Finny the Fish and the Seven Waters - This is making the Umihara picks seem reasonable. They aren't.
Greendog: The Beached Surfer Dude! - see "Beetle Adventure Racing!" above
Submarine Attack, TransWorld Surf, Treasures of the Deep - I think you are mistaking "Summer challenge to play classic games" with "Playing summer themed games challenge". The thing is, you could probably reasonably try to make a list of summer-themed games that are indeed classics. You have seemingly tried to do the opposite of that.
I agree with fast's assessment of his own shitty picks so won't comment more. Thanks for doing my work for me, fast.
-----------------------------
Everything else is defensible. Many of you have revisions to make, though. (I copied/pasted these in the order they were posted if I thought they were still be considered, so if you have dropped the game let me know and I will take it off the wall.)

I must note that: (1) The Clash at Demonhead is the name of a band in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, meaning that people other than extreme video gaming nerds will have at least heard the words "Clash" and "Demonhead" in the same sentence; and (2) if I actually get around to playing it this year, I won't let its name grace this thread topic again.
