Castlevania 2 is the best of the NES bunch. It's also the first metroidvania more or less. Castlevania 3 was a big step down from 2.

Yeah I can see my order being:
2 > 1 > 3.
2 > 1 > 3.

You've got the order 100% correct.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I've started to appreciate the first game a lot more, though, so depending on when you ask me, I might put the first or the second game in front. And I might even swap the second and third, but the third never comes first. Got all that?
Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I kind of feel the same way about Castlevania II. Sure it's the easiest of the trio, but it was by far (bad translation remediated by Nintendo Power w/fold out map) the most creative and just fun to play and explore of the lot by far. From a pure platformer though, Castlevania III kicks its ass up and down the line-up but they're really night and day. Castlevania (original) is a nice one as well given the age, not as fun, far shorter, but it's not like it aged badly either thankfully.
The game (CV2) just gets so much disrespect it bugs me. It falls into that valley that SMB2 did years ago due to internet bigmouth snobbery running up some attention whoring reasons list of why it's god awful and should just be ignored as a 'fake game.' It only took what 15 years of internet e-peen playing for Miyamoto to come out and say it's his favorite of the series, reveal it started life as a Mario game before being a licensee thing, and that it's a legit title to stifle most the whining. I just don't see the old Konami crew stepping up to button up peoples crap about Castlevania II. I think the only (il)legit fix on that would be that one rom hack that adds an overworld map and a purely correct translation to remove the confusion. Then you can see how well done the game really was and how it was ahead of its time (given they didn't go there again until SOTN.)

Whoa gentlemen you mistake me, I said I think 2 is better than 1, but 3 is the best classicvania there is
Well sometimes I might say 4.
I have Bloodlines and Rondo of Blood but have yet to finish either of them. I need to get around to that. Most likely will next october.

The less "metroidvania" in a Castlevania game the better. Fucking hate it. I also hate that term. Castlevania 4 is still the best one in the series and I hated when the series went less gothic and became mega anime and glam rock. I love my hair metal,I enjoy some anime but I want my CV games to be gothic and linear. Another reason LoS felt closer to CV4 in atmosphere.
Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I like Castlevania 3 a lot, but there are elements that don't feel quite as tightly designed as the original game. The first one shows a sort of thoughtfulness to its design that is really kind of mind-blowing. I'd definitely recommend giving Jeremy Parish's writeups over on Anatomy of Games a look, even if you might not agree with all the takeaways.
Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
Rondo is the best "Classicvania", but 3 and 4 are close seconds. I love 2, but for very different reasons. I'm not sure I even put it in the same category as the other classic titles. It is an apple to the Classicvania oranges.
