Re: Summer Games Challenge 2017 - Time to decide your games!
Its getting increasingly hard to differentiate what people are saying not to play because they don't like it, and what they're saying not to play because they don't think it's classic.

For Bogus...
1. Star Tropics - No idea, it's going on my list this year.
2. The Legend of Zelda - Absolutely.
3. Super C - It's good, not a classic.
4. Double Dragon II - Fantastic, and a classic. Play co-op if you can.
5. Mega Man 2 - Only the best NES MM there is, that's all.
6. Zelda 2 -Are you trolling me? Have you really not played this classic yet?
7. Gradius - Classic, I've not beat it yet.
8. Donkey Kong Jungle Beat on GameCube -Might be fun but it's no classic.
9. Donkey Kong on Gameboy - It didn't hook me, but most people love it.
10. Betrayal at Krondor PC - Overrated janky crud with GREAT writing. Not a classic IMO.
11. Ravenloft PC - Never played it.
12. QFG5 - Never played it. QFG2 is my favorite.
13. The Last express - Never played it.
14. Ultima 7 - Definitely a classic. Go for the GOG version.
15. Day of the Tentacle - Was good for its time, don't know about today. A classic though.
16. Under A Killing Moon - Never played it.
17. sonic adventure 2 - Manages to be worse than the first Sonic Adventure. Not a classic in my world.

Re: Summer Games Challenge 2017 - Time to decide your games!
Ok, thanks to you guys I've knocked it down to 10 I think I might do. I might still change some things, but this is what I have currently:
Castlevania Symphonia of the Night (PS1)
Chrono Trigger (SNES)
Shadow Hearts (PS2)
YU-NO (PC)
Phantasy Star (SMS)
Yoshi’s Island (SNES)
Prince of Persia (SNES)
Super Metroid (SNES)
DOOM (?)
Donkey Kong Country (SNES)
Not sure what version of DOOM I should play though. I remember trying to play it on GOG but it wasn't working so well, but maybe there is an equally good version that less of a pain to set up? I'm not really sure on that haha.

Well if you don't mind a controller, then it's available on Xbox 360 and Xbox One.laurenhiya21 wrote: Not sure what version of DOOM I should play though. That's a good list. I don't know much about YU-NO, and Shadow Hearts probably isn't a classic (but is very good).laurenhiya21 wrote:Ok, thanks to you guys I've knocked it down to 10 I think I might do. I might still change some things, but this is what I have currently:

If you're going to play DOOM, do it on PC. I played there with a gamepad, and while it was slightly tricky to set up, it's by far the superior version.

Eye of the Beholder II is the second in the EotB trilogy and considered the best entry. The series also lets you port over your party from the previous game, meaning you can have one long, continuous adventure. While the first entry is not considered groundbreaking in its design, it did prove significantly popular and is well regarded as one of the best of SSI's D&D games. EotB2 improved on many of the original's flaws, and since the third game was developed by a separate studio, 2 provides a much more solid ending. I may continue on to EotB3 eventually, but it's a downgrade and not a title I'd consider a classic. I believe Bogus has experience with the Eye of the Beholder games though, so I await his opinion.Sarge wrote:Eye of the Beholder II - I assume it's a classic, but I have no idea how good it is.
Ultima III - Classic, but no experience outside of the NES version.
Thief II: The Metal Age - Never played, but classic.
Descent II - Super tough, but an awesome six-degrees-of-freedom shooter. Absolutely a classic.
Dungeon Master - Definitely a classic. I'm guessing you're going for the SNES version, given your attempt to beat all the SNES RPGs?
Ultima III was one of the first games to introduce animated characters and brought the party system of Wizardry to 3rd person RPGs, making it a major influence on future JRPG design. The game received numerous accolades even over a year after its release, and even into the 1990s it would occasionally appear on Best Game lists. Ultima III marks the end of the original Ultima storyline and is also significant for being the first game Origin Systems published. While nowadays it's usually overshadowed by Ultima IV, in truth this is a vital series full of historically significant games. More folks should play Ultima games. That said, I'd love to have Bone chime in on this one.
Since Sarge, Exhum, and others are willing to declare the likes of Thief II and Descent II classics, I think that fits the narrative, though I'd love to hear what Popo thinks. These are games that have proven their popularity over time and had remarkable influence on the FPS genre (Descent II still has an active mod and multiplayer community, while Thief II had a major mod released in the mid-2000s that operated as a pseudo-Thief III). Unfortunately Thief II is also a bit on the infamous side, since it is Looking Glass Studios' true final game, and numerous failures and delays of other projects combined with a delay on receiving royalties for Thief II are effectively what killed the company. Well, that and Daikatana.
Dungeon Master is gonna be on the SNES. Yep, I'm crazy. It'll probably still be infinitely better than Drakkhen.

Really though, is there a definition of "classic" we can sticky to the main page so we can have some kind of dividing line between what we just don't like and what may or may not be a classic?
StrangeNova beat me to it. I've heard the XBLA port of DOOM is by far the best and most easy to set up version you can get by several DOOM aficionados I know.strangenova wrote:Well if you don't mind a controller, then it's available on Xbox 360 and Xbox One.laurenhiya21 wrote: Not sure what version of DOOM I should play though. Yeah I'm pretty sure that YU-NO isn't well known here, but it's generally considered to be a classic visual novel (with some adventure game aspects), which is why it's on my list.Sarge wrote:That's a good list. And never mind about which DOOM version to play. I got the GOG version to run fine, and I'm alright with playing with a keyboard. I think I may have been dumb (and probably stressed) and didn't realize that DOOM uses the arrow keys and not WASD.
Re: Summer Games Challenge 2017 - Time to decide your games!
I still think DOOM works best with a gamepad. Not sure if that's an unpopular opinion.
Re: Summer Games Challenge 2017 - Time to decide your games!
Yeah, that happens a lot. WASD isn't really standardized for another four or five years, and even when it does get used, there are some interesting experiments with mouselook in mid-90s FPS design. If you're gonna delve into this period, get ready for some unusual control schemes, but the games are awesome.laurenhiya21 wrote: And never mind about which DOOM version to play.
