Much as I generally tend to as well, KoTOR is one where I almost immediately turned around and restarted it as an evil character, which wound up being amusing.Sarge wrote:I have never played as a villain when given a choice. I'm the guy that wants to max out my "morality points", as it were. I had a cool pillar of light behind my character in KOTOR.![]()

Re: RPG Progress Report
It seems to be tied in to the same general system that afflicted Oblivion; the guards are psychic and can see through walls. One of the early mods developed for Oblivion was to make it so that guards didn't know someone got murdered until they actually came across the body or were close enough to hear a scream. Now, it still magically was tied to you (rather than just the possibility of a mystery phantom) but I consider that a necessary evil in an open world game.marurun wrote:I have never understood in games like Fallout 3 and 4 why stealth or otherwise unseen kills get you faction enmity. How do they frikkin know you did any damn thing?

I do not consider that a necessary evil in an open world game, but managing the AI would be pretty hard.MrPopo wrote:Now, it still magically was tied to you (rather than just the possibility of a mystery phantom) but I consider that a necessary evil in an open world game.

I am really disappointed that no one here has professed the virtues of a neutral playstyle--.

KOTOR2 blows the Mass Effect games out of the water in this regard for instance. In KOTOR2 I loved being a nice guy, but only if you paid up or had sacrifices ready. lol
Obsidian > Bioware. Obsidian does a great job painting that gray line.

I totally agree. Bioware has no idea how to do not black-white morality scales (no matter what they name them *cough* Mass Effect *cough*). I enjoyed Kotor 2 so much, I'm still hesitant to play the first game because I'm so sure the writing won't be as goodXeogred wrote:Need better writers and mechanics.pierrot wrote:I am really disappointed that no one here has professed the virtues of a neutral playstyle--.

I played KOTOR1 for the first time last year. It has the neat twist but if you've already played 2, then yeah...
I still really enjoyed it and can give Bioware a lot of props there. It still feels very different from the Star Wars norm in a cool way. It was super ironic how it felt like all the systems for that game, the way it just felt and played, were just like Inquisition which I played probably the year before last (or whenever it was out, so the comparison was easy to make). Maybe they use the same engine. lol
Huge Mass Effect fan, but yeah. KOTOR2 was incredible in different ways. I'm excited to replay the updated Steam version sometime.
I have no idea how or why I played them out of order, but that was back in the day when you were younger and played whatever you got your hands on. I had KOTOR1 on Steam as well, but it seemed like a headache to get working well so I just opted for the Xbox version instead.
I played Bioware's Jade Empire back in the day too but that one didn't really pull me in.

Re: RPG Progress Report
Obsidian has better writing, but not necessarily better design chops. Bioware built a more cohesive total packaged experience with KOTOR 1. I don't think KOTOR 2 is a better game, but it sure does shine a harsh light on BioWare's deficiencies. Obsidian more roundly one-upped Bethesda with Fallout New Vegas. BioWare has every advantage over Bethesda.
Re: RPG Progress Report
The unfair thing is that Obsidian had like, a year to make KOTOR2 and New Vegas or something ridiculous like that. Even on a crunch, they outclassed Bioware and Bethesda at their own game. They should be the ones under Obsidian's thumb.
For me it's Obsidian > Bioware > Bethesda.
Crazy they made this for fun. Makes me wish Obsidian could bring back Jedi Knight or something.

Avellone isn't at Obsidian any longer, so I wonder how their writing will fair.
