It is surely nostalgia at work, but I believe it is also our recent focus on collecting for original hardware. I think the hunt, investment, and slower pace of original hardware collecting really boosts retro gaming interest, and I can see how the loss of this 'thrill' can lead to a tapering off of interest overall. When we were primarily emulating, it was basically like Spotify; we traded authenticity and a more complete interaction with the game for convenience, and there was little reason to stick with a game for long.
I did recently play through the new DS3 DLC and RE7 to try and break out of the 'modern doldrums', and I'm working on Doom 2016 now, but I can already hear Hard Corps calling.
