It is. Adventure really impressed me back when I was a kid, and I still reminisce about it. I had a neighbor who owned a 2600 when I was a young kid, and I played the likes of this, Combat, and E.T. quite a bit.

You might also look into Haunted House. That is another excellent game with multiple screens to explore.

Yeah, if you are not I to score attack games, these are great recommendations. That is also a big thing for most Atari haters. If you aren't big on score attack arcade games of old, the system isn't as appealing as game design was almost entirely built on that in that era.

I had to figure out Adventure on my own because I bought it loose and that (along with ET and Haunted House) were the first few games that I played that I could consider as completed (they all have end goals)

Honestly, you can simply ignore the "score attack" aspect of many games if you wish. Take shooters like Gorf, Phoenix, and Vanguard for instance (I talked about all three in the Games Beaten thread this year). All have distinct levels and a final boss battle before looping. There's a sense of "beating" the game you don't get from the likes of Pac-Man, Asteroids, Space Invaders, and others that present the same scenery again and again.

Other genres tend to have distinct levels as well, like run & guns (Commando, Front Line, Ikari Warriors) and platformers (Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Junior, Mario Bros., Kangaroo, Popeye, Moon Patrol, BurgerTime, Jungle Hunt). Plus the aforementioned adventure games like Adventure, E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark, Tutankham, Haunted House.

I think some folks might be surprised how complex and interesting Atari 2600 games can be. Granted, the Atari 2600 library is so big it's easy to not know about the more esoteric stuff.

The actual box is pretty gaudy but the artwork is badass! Didn't end up buying it, as the cart was unfortunately in rough shape. But yeah, Atari artwork is killer.

A lot of my favorites in here. More people need to give Secret Quest a try.

I am another staunch defender of the 2nd generation. It's gameplay stripped down to the bare essentials. No matter how video games evolve they're still built on the fundamentals that were set here. By today's standards a lot of them are kind of like micro-games you can pick up and play for short periods of time. They make perfect handheld distractions.

Metroid Other M is enjoyable. Not the best in the series but not the worst. (ehem Hunters)

Agreed with the first part, not sure about the last. I enjoyed Hunters, even if it wasn't a true Metroid.

Castlevania IV is the best in the series and the SOTN and it's clones are vastly overrated. Good but not the greatest thing ever.

I love Super Castlevania IV, but given SotN's status in my top five of all time, I think I'll disagree. Both are tons of fun, though.

Lords of Shadow was good. Not played the second,don't plan to.

Agreed, it was good. I'd consider giving the second a shot, honestly. It's got some serious tonal whiplash but actually plays pretty well. I enjoyed my time with it.

I did not like Mario Galaxy.

I loved Mario Galaxy, but that's actually got me curious. What's your favorite of the 3D entries? Or are you more of a Sonic person?

Dragon Age Inquisition despite my 200 hours into it,is not a very good game. Enjoyable sometimes but not very good.

I really enjoyed the game, but I also didn't put 200 hours into it. A lot of the more banal sidequests I just ignored.

Ninja Gaiden III Razors Edge is very enjoyable. I will admit not nearly as good as NG2.

Chrono Cross is good.

Yep, it is. It's also terrible as a sequel to Chrono Trigger from a thematic standpoint, but it's a fine PSX RPG.

I don't like FFVII (not saying it's bad) and feel FFIX is the best FF on PS1.

I was disappointed by FFVII. But then, I was also disappointed by FFIX. I actually prefer FFVIII for the PSX era games.

Saturn had just as good quality RPGs as PS1.

Quality... yeah, probably, it just didn't have enough. But with Panzer Dragoon Saga, Shining the Holy Ark, Shining Force III, Dragon Force, Legend of Oasis, and Magic Knight Rayearth, there's quality there. I think in Japan the situation was a lot better. We missed out on a ton of stuff.

Xenogears as much as I like it,the story is kinda rubbish.

Shadow of the Colossus has a great concept but terrible game play.

Simple, but I don't think it was terrible. SotC was one of my absolute favorite games of that generation, but I think it's more from the experience than the gameplay.

@ Sarge. My favorite Mario games are Super Mario World and Super Mario 64. Mario 3D world got me interested in Mario games again. Simply loved it.
