Not necessarily, I think a case could be made that the Switch is 8th gen and the Wii U was a step between. Or if the Wii U is 8th gen then the Switch still is as well.

There is some precedent, as the 2600 and 5200 are both considered 2nd gen.

No it's 8th gen. Wii was 7th gen. Dreamcast is 6th. Switch is a hybrid and in a cat. of it's own.

I consider both the Wii U and the Switch to be 8th gen platforms.

I also agree that a "Best Games of Xth Generation" thread sounds like a neat idea.

Second gen is a fine mess. There's a shit-ton of consoles, and a whopping six years between the first and last systems released. The difference between the Channel F and the ColecoVision is absolutely huge.

I think we are now approaching that fine mess again in terms of generations. Hardware revisions and things such as tablets and motion and VR start obscuring.

The entire notion of console generations, while appearing to be technological, is really more about arbitrary sales competition cycles. They are a easy catch-all reference point at best, and misleading at worst.

Generation has always been a measure of time rather than technology.

I tend to agree with the way GameFAQs has the generations tiered:

https://www.gamefaqs.com/games/systems

Although I do agree in the "8th Generation" paradigms have been broken and things are much murkier then before.

That's what I said. But there's often a perception that it's linked to technology. The 3rd, 4th, and 5th generations are also termed the 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit generations, respectively.

That looks about right, but it certainly isn't clean at all.
