The second Legend of Heroes is twice as long as the first. Or maybe 1.75 times as long. I'm perhaps not the best person to ask, as my Japanese isn't great so that naturally slows me down (I played the first game in English, but the second has never been translated). If you enjoy the first one as much as you indicate you'll like this one too.
You should try Shada anyway just for yucks. The Ys aping is pretty humorous. There's even a naked goddess on the title screen!

Re: RPG Progress Report
After loosing my save and getting a whole new cart and then getting back to where I was before, I was finally able to make some NEW progress in my Final Fantasy Four Job Fiesta Run.

I have been walking around as 4 Black Mages and everything was going find. I then ran into Garula in the Walz Tower and beat that boss by the skin of my teeth. He hurts a ton and is not weak to any magic, so I had trouble killing him quickly. Thankfully, he died and I got my second class. After walking around as offensive mages, I was hoping for something physical. I really wanted Mystic/Sorcerer or even Berserker or I would even take a Red Mage. I did not want Time Mage or Summoner. This time, I thankfully got something different...

A mage that does offensive magic damage. Yeah....
However, I began to learn some of the Summoner's abilities as they change on which summons you get with each Final Fantasy game. I was amazed to see that I actually got a HEAL Summon and one that does PHYSICAL damage. I am not too thrilled about 4 mages that do offensive magic damage, but I am beginning to see the benefits.
Up next is the Fire Crystal with Trainer, Geomancer, Ninja, Bard & Hunter. I would absolutely LOVE a Ninja. I wouldn't mind a Trainer, Bard or Hunter. I would not want a Geomancer.

You have higher odds of physical damage dealers on the enxt 2 crystals. Summoner, Red Mage, Time mage and Mystic Knight all combine really well with Black Mage, so you definitely didn't want a berzerker.Markies wrote:After loosing my save and getting a whole new cart and then getting back to where I was before, I was finally able to make some NEW progress in my Final Fantasy Four Job Fiesta Run.

Just hope you don't draw Geomancer or Bard next or you'll have a squishy squishy team. At least they'll kill things quickly!
The last stone is actually basically all physical job classes, but the dancer is suishy and random and the Chemist is OP but slow to set up. You'll be hoping for a Samurai or Dragoon there.

Re: RPG Progress Report
I noticed that with the Garula. If any enemy has a weakness to a Magic Spell, then I kill it quickly. When I ran into Magissa at the top of the North Mountain, I killed her before she could even summon her husband. However, the Garula had a ton of HP and no weakness and hits hard, so I had trouble beating him.alienjesus wrote:You have higher odds of physical damage dealers on the enxt 2 crystals. Samurai was my go-to class for my previous times, so I know how to use him. I just want at least one front row fighter. Somebody that can take a hit as an all squishy team is very scary.
But, I am glad to hear the Black Mage/Summoner go well together. I don't feel like I have gotten a bad team, it is just different from how I normally play Final Fantasy games.

Re: RPG Progress Report
Job set 3 is the 'weird' job set, that's the one that can always come out weird. The jobs are mostly decent, but some of them require some effort or are only useful in specific circumstances. Just hope you don't get the Geomancer.
Crystal 1 is generally the 'standard' jobs, with blue mage as the odd ball.
Crystal 2 is the magical set, with berzerker being an odd one out
Crystal 3 is the most unusual set, with Beastmaster, Bard and Geomancer being kinda kooky, and even Ninja and Ranger being a bit different to standard. They're all a little squishy though...
Crystal 4 is basically the physical job set, as there's no magic on offer really. The chemist can mix up some spells which hit hard if used by a magic focused character like a black mage or summoner, but the rest of what's on offer is all attack focused. 50/50 on the squishy front technically, but the Chemist can double peoples HP so he can at least cover that weakness for boss fights.
The chemist is the most ridiculous job in the game in terms of overall potential, but man, it takes effort to use it.

Re: RPG Progress Report
Summoners go through a weird growth curve. They're going to be dealing heavy damage for world one and the first half of world two. Then you pick up Golem and get an amazing skill for bosses. But about that same time your damage starts to really fall off, as you're in a glut of support summons until you can get Syldra in world three. But prior to that you can wipe every trash mob with one cast of Titan.

Syldra plus air knife or whatever it's called is amazing for the rest of the game though.MrPopo wrote:Summoners go through a weird growth curve. Re: RPG Progress Report
That it is. Like I said, it makes the second half of world 2 a slog (especially if you're doing a Chaos run and have multiple summoner slots). But since you've got Black Mage you can slap that on your Summoner and have high powered magic AND the Summoner's sky high magic stat.

Re: RPG Progress Report
Oh yeah, my Magic Stat is absolutely insane and I can wipe most any enemies with like one hit now that I have the Level 2 spells.
I was looking through the Summon spell list and I was kind of amazed at the differences in them. I am kind of used to later versions of Final Fantasy where Summoner basically equates to Offensive Magic. However, in my first three summons, I got Wind Magic which is completely new, Chocobo which does physical damage and one that Saps HP and gives it to party members for a cheap heal spell. Once I saw those combinations, I turned my view point on Summoners around and was actually pretty excited for it.
But, as AJ said, the next Crystal is really kind of the turning point and it will really tell the makeup of my party. If I get 2 physical classes, then I could have an even party. However, I could also have 4 magic dealers, so that would cause some hesitation on my part.
