Using video capture devices to play console video games.

Post by newt42 »

I am planning on getting this product.

Just to make sure before I buy it, could a person simply plug a console right into the device and play it on the computer screen, via some sort of application?
Systems: SNES, PS1, GBA SP, Gamecube, DS Lite, Wii, PS3 (Fully Backwards Compatible), Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, a Sega CD, and a Sega Saturn.

We've had threads about this concept plenty, and I'll just say again, it's not a route you should take. No capture device can substitute for an actual TV when it comes to 480i game consoles.

Would it suffice for a Dreamcast?

If you have a Dreamcast just get a VGA box and plug it into your monitor.

I don't know too much about the topic, but i don't think you'll be finding anything sufficient for doing that for less than $100. Also, a usb device for it will NEVER be able to do well enough, it'd have to be internal to even be close.
For a dreamcast, just get a monitor (assuming you have a laptop) and a vga box.

my pc is a "media" pc, meaning that it has component and s-video built in. My PC is high end and specifically built for media yet the lag between pushing left on a controller and really moving left is horrible. Stick to TV or VGA adapter.

for game recording purposes, these do work ok.

Depending the quality, you may get a little lag.

I have a pinnacle usb HDTV stick, and there wasn't any of the lag i had with previous setups.

But for dreamcast, you really should get a VGA box.
