That too. I can totally see it.

Get yourself a copy of Taito Legends 2 and play Dungeon Magic. NOW.Exhuminator wrote:I probably have a thing for medieval beat 'em ups though. I think Golden Axe > Final Fight > Streets of Rage, which is debatably insane but is what it is.
Probably because it's still crazy expensive, having the curse of 1992 NES release all over it.strangenova wrote:Im with you on TMNT 3. It's one of my top NES games. The music is top notch and the gameplay is tight and solid. It just gets passed over because it came out around the same time as the snes. So everyone remembers the arcade game and turtles in time.
All this talk about Guardian Heroes -- is the GBA port really any good? I see mixed reviews for that and the version of Gunstar Heroes (not beat em up I know) for GBA.

I wouldn't say 30 for a loose cart is crazy expensive or unreasonable for game that is good.ExedExes wrote: Probably because it's still crazy expensive, having the curse of 1992 NES release all over it.

Re: What happened to beat em' ups?
To clarify...Guardian Heroes for the GBA is nothing like the Saturn original. (They are in the same genre, I guess.) The best way to play Guardian Heroes today is to download the HD port for the Xbox 360. It is totally awesome, and it is only $5.
The Gunstar Super Heroes for the GBA is totally awesome. It is not as good as Gunstar Heroes, but I still recommend it.

Re: What happened to beat em' ups?
Yeah, it's a completely original game, and it doesn't do layers. It's more like a traditional belt-scroller. It's also got a lot of slowdown. Like a lot. I still liked it quite a bit, but I wouldn't go overboard on what you pay for it. I got a complete copy three years ago for $7.
Re: What happened to beat em' ups?
There is definitely a lot of truth to Dynasty Warriors being kind of the new age beat em up... but man, I can't get into them at all. I played some of the PS2 ones, some Samurai Warriors randomly in there somewhere, one of the Gundam ones, and finally the Fist of the Northstar one. I get bored at like mission 3 and I'm done with these games (so as much as I love Zelda I'm still skeptical about Hyrule Warriors, but I plan to get it someday). I prefer action in games to be more sparingly and methodical rather than wave/mob based. I guess an interesting example is how much I love Doom, but I never really care for "slaughter maps" which squish you in between endless hordes of enemies and you're basically expected to BFG your way out and around the map. That's cool in spots but some maps out there are entirely that and pretty boring. Or like others are saying, DMC, new Ninja Gaiden, etc, now those types of games are some of my favorites. But yeah no denying I can see the comparison with DW and the genre.
Re: What happened to beat em' ups?
I think the problem is with the DW titles you're forced into ever changing primary and secondary objectives, plus having to manage groups of people and specifically jumping to assist or total control take over another lead of a group. It's a total micromanagement beat em up hybrid. Often you find some rotten cheap objectives that are hard to meet or you can repeatedly fail in the worst ways with no clue until luck happens upon taking another action. Something like Final Fight, Guardian Heroes, SoR, TMNT and the rest it's not a deep thought game, you go in and beat the crap out of anything that moves until it doesn't.
I can't get into DW games either, I tried hard twice before, there was a Wii release or was it Wii U, and then the launch one for the 3DS years ago. I could go a ways into them but I got fed up with the annoying objective change ups and micromanagement when I just wanted to beat things into submission. It's why I never grabbed Hyrule Warriors Legends on New3DS because it looks amazing, but it also reeks of something I'd get fed up with quickly.

That looks to be the prevailing opinion on both of those games. It's said that Heroes got a piss poor localization too. Shame. i know which one to get now.prfsnl_gmr wrote:To clarify...Guardian Heroes for the GBA is nothing like the Saturn original. (They are in the same genre, I guess.)
