Actually Ack, all those ideas are great. It would be great to have a rundown of every console made and have the ultimate reference guide for them.Ack wrote:I've been watching this topic pretty closely, and it's given me a few laughs, not because what I think what you guys are asking for is wrong, but because we've recently been considering some of these same ideas.
Just a couple of quick questions. When you guys ask for more obscure consoles, would you also like to see much more in terms of old school? I mean, 1970s consoles, since we haven't given them too much love. Would you like the really weird ones, like the R-Zone, to pop up? Do you guys want to see articles covering knock offs, examining things like the Turbo Duo or FC Twin or some of those Russian consoles so seldom seen in the West?
Also, when you want information about genres, would you enjoy a history, or more like a rough guide on how to approach it? Do you want us to continue to give breakdowns of genres by console, such as my recent article on fighting games for the Nintendo 64, or do you prefer the more open approach of the Hidden Gems articles? Do you want us to publish control schemes and relevant information, such as how much space a game might take up on a memory card?
I'm assuming for peripherals you'd want everything from the PlayStation Dex Drive to the Master System's 3D glasses, arranged by console.
And keep the ideas coming in guys. This site's for everybody, so it only makes sense that we'd be interested in what you guys want to know and think is lacking from the Internet.

If you mean one of these:Ack wrote:Please tell me you have the PS1 Beatmania Turntable. I so want one of those.

Yes. If you mean an ASC (arcade quality), not yet. I mentioned in another topic that the Beatmania controller I would like costs over $1000 shipped. I'm not sure how the hell I'm going to convince my wife for that one.

Another article idea? Alrightie.

So more on lesser known consoles and the database seem to be the most desired per this article and conversations I have had with others. Looks good to me.
Religious Censorship would make an interesting article as well, I will have to look into that for personal curiosity.
Obscure controllers brings us to an interesting predicament of owning/obtaining/borrowing said controllers for a time. I will admit, I have my fair share of off kilter controllers, but not nearly enough. I know in the past Racket want to catalog all of the controllers for a database of somesort - not related to the Dreamcast one that was mentioned, but I believe the idea was put on the backburner for obvious reasons. We may have to approach it again soon. And if I can obtain enough of the same camera we may have a very neat 3d view of every controller I can get ahold of.

Re: Future Article Ideas
I've got a few things I've been thinking about lately. One is what are the defining moments in play control. There are some modes of play control that spurred entire genres (turn based battles of Dragon Warrior, First Person shooting in Wolfenstein, etc.) and others that are just really unique and cool (Battle with Psychomantis in Metal Gear Solid, Remote controlled robots in R.A.D., etc.). This could be broken down by console into top 10 defining control systems, and top 10 novelties.
The other thing I have been thinking about is to write descriptions of various emotions (anger, fear, happiness, etc.) to describe their qualities and action tendencies, then to discuss how videogame designs have succeeded or failed to elicit these emotions in their games (with particular emphasis on the importance of play-control).
