I'm pretty set on it too, but I figured since it's a cross platform catch all it would be nice to have it for a pile of things on my tablet that can go between that and my PC.

I have no idea if they're compressed, hadn't even considered it. I know about the NG ROM bios file, and that I actually double dipped placing it in the game roms directory and the directory you're supposed to put such things.

So far have thrown Genesis, NES, SNES, GB(any) at it and DS too, NGPC even, nothing gives me a problem but NG just pops back to the menu if I try and force a load, if I go the normal route the stuff just doesn't appear in the directory it's sitting since it doesn't see it there in the app. It's very grating and I can't get help online either as I've tried 3 different reddits that cover retroarch, android and neo geo and no one has the courtesy to even reply once.

I got it to work in RetroArch using either the MAME 2014 core, or the FBA core. Have the neogeo.zip file in the same folder as your other ROMs and it should work. It did on my phone, anyway.

Yeah, the whole parent ROM thing has always been confusing to me. I still don't really understand it.

It was also a pain in the ass to get my controller working.

That said, I downloaded some shmup ROMs for MAME last year for the shmup Game of the Month high score contests and things worked pretty smoothly.
Have: Sega Genesis, SNES, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Atari 800XL, PC, N3DS XL, Wii U, GBA, Xbox One, Switch

The parent rom is the original first release complete arcade game roms. All Jr roms carry only the different parts of the rom needed for the different game and rely on the parent rom to load all the sets. Most of the time if the sets are included in the Jr rom, it will run just fine. Know what you mean, sometimes the Jr rom has an entirely unrelated game name! Mame has a section that lists out all the Parent and Jr roms.

Hello World. Back in the world of retro gaming after a few years in the wilderness (Skyrim, roguelikes, etc).

Brawlers is one of my favourite genres, starting back at the arcades. There was something instantly alluring about them for my young self...martial arts + unprecedented freedom of movement/action. Am getting back into MAME slowly and one of my first CTR+R attempts yielded 64th Street: A Detective Story - insta-reminder of how awesome this genre is.

I thought they were making a bit of a comeback recently - not too surprising, seeing as indie scene is mainly based on resurrecting old stuff (for good or worse). Just played something called Lost Castle - not too bad, I like the fact that it`s all quite randomized. Also I really liked the new River City Ransom - had no time to check it out in depth, but first my first impressions were very positive.

By the way, anybody remembers link to a "brawler database" of sorts - I seem to recall a site dedicated purely to this genre, but that was quite a few years ago, wonder if they`re still around.

Saw a news article and it reminded me of this thread.

http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2017/03/pier_solar_studio_is_back_with_a_brand_new_sega_mega_drive_beat_em_up_paprium

If the words in the link didn't completely give it away, WaterMelon (the Pier Solar team) is making a new Genesis / Mega Drive cartridge of a beat 'em up called "Paprium".

Try the video. The trailer is epic.

Just to be fair though don't really trust them in the least bit to hold onto any month, quarter, let alone year for a release on that as they're procrastinating flakes who oddly also use their own form of 'gems' for currency on the site to rope you into buying.

It took them over 4 years for Pier Solar, and now we're into how many on this, and them spinning bs about their SNES project that's seemingly going nowhere. It's nice they have something brewing up, but when it arrives is another matter, and if it'll live up to the hype they developed for themselves with Pier Solar and that project too.

I don't know if this project being just central to the Genesis/MD helps the delay issues - it's quite possible. I wouldn't back them again myself.
