I think it's approximately the last quarter to a third of Crysis that's the floating aliens (plus the zero gee no combat level immediately prior). Pro tip for the final boss; the weapon they give you requires you to lock on by aiming down the sights and won't fire without a lock. I spent longer than I'd like to admit trying to figure out how to shoot it.

The first open world FPS I can remember playing was 2001's Operation Flashpoint. From there the ARMA series evolved. You might want to check out ARMA 2 or 3. Also Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter on PC has very open levels. It's a very easy game you could knock it out in a day.

Duly noted, thanks.

LOL WUT

We discussed GRAW when I was going through it and I said it was the most difficult FPS I have played up to that point. I still agree.

Has anyone played Men of Valor? Is it worth getting? I heard it was by the same guys who did MoH:AA which I liked.

I loved the original Operation Flashpoint, it was groundbreaking in its approach to realism. Though since, I always think of it more a as "sim" than an "FPS". I also tried early Arma 2 and was unimpressed - these games are mostly MP oriented and SP suffers. One of these days I will maybe research it properly and use some mods, but it`s time consuming, so it`s a future project.

GRAW is a good game, but again, in my mind I classify it as a squad-based shooter, not a pure FPS, since you have to worry about your team. Kind of like Full Spectrum Warrior and such.

To be honest, the best FPS I played recently that would tick these initial conditions - openness, intelligent opponents - is Planetside 2. Now, it`s of course an MMOFPS and an f2p one to boot (something I never thought I would touch with a bargepople) so comparison with SP FPS` is unfair...bu there it is. Nobody bothers writing decent open world AI anymore so this is a valid option. Only problem is, I `m too old to maintain the level of concentration needed to survive in it for a reasonable amount of time 8)...truly, Auraxis is a No Country For Old Men...

I think I played it for a few levels deep back in the day (can`t recall if it was PC or Xbox) - I remember it was definitely decent enough, if you like original MoH games.

I beat it back in 2008. Yes MoV was made by some of the same MoH developers. I enjoyed most of the experience (sans final mission). I appreciated that it was Vietnam/jungle themed, and not just another WW2 me-too. MoV was more difficult than any MoH I'd played, the AI can be rather cunning (they will box you in). I think it's worth playing for a genre fan.

That's enough of a recommendation for me while it's $2.50 on GOG.

I beat the original Painkiller and the Battle out of Hell expansion for it nearly a decade ago, and Painkiller: Resurrection about 5 years ago. With Painkiller: Overdose going on sale over the weekend on GOG, I figured why not grab it and get back to horde slaying?

I'm a few levels in, and so far I haven't really been impressed. Mostly I'm using reskinned weapons that have the same function as previous Painkiller guns, but I have yet to get my hands on my beloved stake launcher. The one truly new weapon, a demon head, does make for a nice little toy though, and its scream is a pointblank damage hose.

Level and enemy design haven't really impressed me much yet either, with a couple of enemies being noticeably cheap(the cyclops in the first level has an eye laser that cannot be dodged, you can only run for cover). I did enjoy the second level, which was a sort of feudal Japanese city followed by a tower run complete with booby traps and massive monster fights.

I'll stick with it and see how I feel at the end. It looks to be about 18 levels total, so we'll see.

Crysis
-------
I'm close to the end. I'm past the zero gravity part (reminded me of Descent), and just started the part where you get to fly a VTOL. Maybe possibly might beat this today.
