How Is Your SNES Gaming Going?
Re: How Is Your SNES Gaming Going?
The only one I really had any nostalgia for to speak of was the first one. I didn't own it for a long, long time. I booted up DKC3 somewhat recently, but got distracted by other stuff. (And Zelda is proving to be the biggest time sink.)

Re: How Is Your SNES Gaming Going?
I actually only rented the first one. It was the only game my mom ever played with me (she liked playing Donkey Kong back in the day), so I've always held it dear. Plus, Aquatic Ambiance.
The second game is where most of my DKC time was spent. Didn't own that one either, a friend did, but we played the hell out of it.
I also really like Returns and Tropical Freeze, so I guess I owe it to myself to give 3 a fair chance

I didn't like the physics in the Returns games, honestly. A little too much momentum. I still think the first game is the best; yes, even better than DKC2.
Re: How Is Your SNES Gaming Going?
It has a much different feel, or "tone", then the other two games. It definitely through me off a little the first time I played it. But I very much enjoy that all three games have a distinct tone to them. I'm glad that it's THAT much different, and doesn't just feel like a DKC2 hack.dunpeal2064 wrote:Yeah, that is a game I never played once as a kid. I booted it up a few years ago in an emulator, but didn't end up getting too far. I did like some things (World map exploration!), but the overall tone felt a bit off, so I didn't persevere. Seeing that thread though, I'll definitely play it once I get the flash cart!

DKC2 is the only one I have nostalgia for, but I gotta say that the trilogy are all solid, and this is coming from someone who is not a fan of the genre. They are well worth checking out and picking up.

I can definitely see that. I also feel like they lack the great tone and atmosphere of the original games. Where they excel for me, though, is in the level design, which in the later (and especially the K) levels, borders on Kaizo Mario levels of perfection and sadism.Sarge wrote:I didn't like the physics in the Returns games, honestly. Good point, I think attempting to emulate what dkc2 did could have only been a let down, since at least to me it is close to the best platformer on the system. So it makes sense that it needed to bring something new to the table. Its just that, what it brought (lighter tone and, well, honestly, Kiddie Kong) aren't immediately appealing.Ziggy587 wrote:It has a much different feel, or "tone", then the other two games. You've definitely sold me though, I want to play it like right now.

I like DKC1 the best. Coolest atmosphere and locations. But it is rather extremely easy.
Re: How Is Your SNES Gaming Going?
Late to this DK jam party, but I'm on the same thoughts that it was kind of downhill after the first as it just had the best play, feel, characters(DK only in this which is dumb), design and atmosphere over all. I hated DKC2 in comparison, not a fan of the collectarding up coins to get further plus no DK bugged me a lot. DKC3 I didn't even get because of its release date only until this decade. Truth be told it's solid, very good really, better than DKC2 and while that big doofus is a baby in a sleeper it actually plays and handles fairly well more like DK giving a feeling of the original back to the game with good tweaks learned from DKC2s design making it a better experience.
It has bugged me that the faux DKC titles that have come out since in the last decade have not been much good at all. They get a look down pretty well, but the gameplay has ended up being overly picky, grating, or hard and not by the best of design reasons making them feel like knockoffs to me. Not to say earlier stuff didn't have problems as the ACM conversion/downgrade on GB/GBC was pretty terrible making it confusing to play those on a little screen but overall not bad either (using a Super Gameboy.)

The DKC Returns hate here is hilarious. I give up.

I love DKC Returns, and find it just as good, if not better, than the SNES entries.Xeogred wrote:The DKC Returns hate here is hilarious. I give up.
