The stuff I've seen work well:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort#SlimPort

Granted that's a physical connection to the HDTV. But then again, so is the Switch's dock.

Popo makes a fair point about having an all in one easy solution that the average consumer can deal with. I assume going forward we'll see smartphone solutions that are just as easy. But we're not there yet, and the Switch presently is. So sell it while ya got it Nintendo.

Given how resistant the general public have been to a gaming-centric smart phone (like the Xperia Play, I guess) in the past, it will be interesting to see if the Switch opens up the market for that kind of thing. Like, Imagine a Switch that's half the size but basically does the same thing (with a more Xbone-ish library in terms of very light on exclusives), but is also a 4G phone that plays Android games.

You'll also notice how much more profitable the F2P/Freemium games are than dedicated game titles. Companies are reluctant to release full games on smartphones unless they are ports of already successful non-smartphone titles. Most people just don't use their phones or tablets for gaming the way people use consoles or dedicated gaming portables. If phone, then Candy Crush. If 3DS, then Pokemon Sun/Moon.

Right now the "most people" part is very true. I have a theory that the more powerful phones get, in tandem with ease of HDTV streaming/controller interfacing, the more core gamers they'll attract. Eventually there will be a sea change.

Decidedly unfortunately the mobile effect has already decimated the handheld market. I don't see a Vita successor, and at this point I'd be mildly surprised if the 3DS received one. I basically see the 3DS and Vita as the last bastions of dedicated portable gaming, and it's why I've spent so much $$$ collecting their respective libraries. Sentimental spending, I suppose.

On that note, if anything, I think the Switch is pushing the market more towards dedicated hard core gaming on phones. As phones and tablets approach more Switch-like power, it'll be a much simpler and less risky enterprise for companies to develop games and peripherals for them because they can port those games to/from the Switch.

I imagine we will see plenty of indies shared between mobile and the Switch, yes.

Can you imagine that the Switch could be a precursor to a Nintendo smartphone?

I'd buy that phone.

I'd definitely buy that phone. Fuck, I'd drop $100 on a toaster if Nintendo made it.
