Console launch games in hindsight
Re: Console launch games in hindsight
Looking back it's like quality + quantity wise the Gamecube, Dreamcast, Neo Geo AES, and Gameboy Advance, and Neo Geo Pocket Color had like the best launches fitting both catagories. Aside from those you'll have a big line up and mostly turds, or you have a small line up and a solid list of games (like SNES with those 5 US releases that still end up on best of lists.)
The Switch launch list isn't big, but the quality is by far there. They seem to have gone with a less is more out of the gate like SNES with the quality and less choices. I can't fault them on it as I'm sure more could have been done but the loss of having a game drought kind of counter balances that.
Had they got their crap together and had the eShop up you'd have 5 truly stellar Neo Geo arcade titles, VOEZ, and a few other downloads like Blaster Master 0 on there already which really would round things out. Mind you if you look at the small difference in the Japanese list you have Dragon Quest Heroes 1+2 and that's no joke on quality and a crap load of hours to be invested there. Shame SquareEnix is so incompetent they couldn't just have the translation ready to go day one as they should know better in this day and age.

You can say the same about the NES.marurun wrote:The Dreamcast had a great US launch, but the Japanese launch was really weak.

I think that also tied in with when the console was released. More development time for titles for the later U.S. launch.samsonlonghair wrote:You can say the same about the NES.marurun wrote:The Dreamcast had a great US launch, but the Japanese launch was really weak.

That was because Bernie Stolar stopped any US projects on the Saturn to focus on getting ready for the Dreamcast to launch.marurun wrote:The Dreamcast had a great US launch, but the Japanese launch was really weak.
Otherwise, I try to avoid buying consoles at launch. The 360 I think really tempt me because Oblivion was released near launch or was it launch? And that looked amazing compared to my ps2 games at the time. Otherwise so far on the Switch launch, the games and hardware arent making me want to bite in. I'm more tempted to buy a Wii U again for Breath of the Wild then getting a Switch.

There seems to be a strong (okay, I really want to say "hysterical" ;) backlash against the Switch/Zelda, which perhaps is a symptom of a more widespread modern malady. These are sort of herd-mentality driven hate campaigns against subjects that irk certain folk and thanks to the wonders of the internet snowball into quite ridiculous dimensions (eg Gamergate, No Man`s Sky, Mass Effect ending etc)
Here we have people mostly disgruntled by the existence of Switch in itself and also the uber-high Zelda scores (paid reviews!!!!1!!@!). It`s quite sad really...I mean, I personally come from Atari/Spectrum/Commodore wars era (others will recall S/NES vs Sega) - must say that while we could get quite aggravated disputing +/- of our beloved machines it never went to the extreme aggro levels witnessed nowadays - just a friendly sparring. But then, it was all face-to-face, we had no internets which make anonymous hate oh-so-easy.

Re: Console launch games in hindsight
I haven't seen any kind of backlash like described in my gaming circles - here, twitter, etc. I must follow the right people.

That`s it...I`m a bit of a masochist and frequent n4g.com. It`s a news aggregator that churns out all sorts of articles, but comments and submissions are dominated by young console fanboys & die hard PC master racers. Hence "hot" articles, today for example:retrosportsgamer wrote: I must follow the right people.

http://n4g.com/news/2030706/the-legend- ... adgets-360 7/10
http://n4g.com/news/2030582/zelda-breat ... ndo-switch
Comments underneath are rather telling. Then there`s the modern sport of of a Metacritic negative score Zerg rush spamming.

Good point and likely pretty true. Over the last decade about we've learned from our childish leadership in a trickle down effect it's ok to gang up, mock, screw with, and try and destroy anything that isn't part of the herd mentality whatever it or whomever it may be. You can't just respectfully shut up like an adult or disagree, it's about the art of destruction.akeley wrote:There seems to be a strong (okay, I really want to say "hysterical"backlash against the Switch/Zelda, which perhaps is a symptom of a more widespread modern malady.
