Do you use antivirus and which do you use?

Post by RyaNtheSlayA »

Im currently using Norton Internet Security but once the 90 day trial runs out on it Ill probably just remove it and not install any other suite. I hardly go on the internet except for youtube, this site, and a few others which are 'safe'.

I don't run any anti-virus on my home PC - I find that being careful is usually enough to keep away any viruses and malware.

On a related note, I don't understand how so many people who are moderately computer literate manage to download these kind of things "accidentally." As long as you are careful about what you are clicking on/downloading/opening, there's no need to constantly run a virus program that slows everything down.

I also turn off Windows Firewall and all the rest of the built-in security stuff. I can't stand using a PC with all those warnings, scan reminders, etc. popping up all the time.

I run without antivirus but I also disable a lot of services and run with the firewall on. Unless you are very savvy with internet safety I do not recommend going without antivirus. Likewise, unless you are very Windows savvy, and not just UI savvy but internals savvy, you probably shouldn't play with your services either. You should ALWAYS have some kind of firewall running these days. I also do periodic scans with some free tools like Spybot S&D and Hitman Pro.

I have Avast! Free Version running on my wife's laptop because it seems to have a low profile and a minimal impact on her aging PC.

I've been using AVG Free as well. Sometimes simply browsing the interweb is enough to accidentally get malicious software.

I was using Ad Aware Pro 2005 for a while. A friend gave it to me, you don't need a serial or anything for it. I loved the way it worked, and it didn't use up much system resources. Eventually, it was giving me shit. It would always fail to update. So I decided, since I like it so much, I'll buy the new version. What a mistake that was! Ad Aware sucks now!

Before that, I don't even remember what I was using. Before that, I was using AOL Security Center (lol) and before that, NOTHING!

I did hear one interesting idea as an alternative to using a virus/malware program. Some guy said he was just gonna run XP in a virtual machine with no virus protection. I'm figuring, when he gets malware he'd just delete the virtual drive and create a new one with a fresh install of XP. I guess its a good idea, but that's too much of a hassle.
