What retro system do you just not understand the appeal of?

I have owned three 3dos: FZ1, FZ10, and 3DO Blaster card. Currently I own a copy of Freedo...no more finicky cd drives for me. The Blaster is the most interesting thing they did. It was an ISA card that let you run 3do games on your PC. Sadly I never had the correct CD drive for it.

I have the one with the wavy top finish. That doesn't make it "more" of a 3DO than the rest, though.

That's a porn game, right? Surely, that's a porn game. It just has to be one - it would be a tragic waste if it wasn't.

Otherwise, I would agree with the Atari 5200 as one I don't see the appeal of myself. And I'm an Atari guy too, just look at my signature line! But honestly, if you want to play 5200 games, save yourself some grief and get an Atari 8-bit computer. You get the same games on cartridge but without the perpetually broken controllers (that suck even when they aren't broken). That's what I did. My 800XL is basically my 5200 substitute.

I also don't see the appeal of the Jaguar.

Here's where I might draw some heat - the Nintendo 64. It just never clicked with me and I thought the graphics looked pretty bad even at the time. I also have always thought that the N64 controller is one of the worst controllers ever made from design perspective. Maybe I just wasn't ready for the shift to 3D games...

no heat here. I've never liked the N64. I'd rather have a Jaguar than an N64. Totally serious.

I like the N64 but it admittedly has a much weaker library than the Saturn and PSX. But those games that are good are really good. Nice to have 5th gen cartridges too.

The controller isn't too bad for the most part. It looks confounding, but most games generally utilize the d-pad or the thumbstick for playing so, no, you don't actually need three hands.

I somehow missed that whole generation of consoles when they were current. I was still rocking out with my 2600, Gray Brick Gameboy, and SNES. We also got a family PC and I started playing a few PC games during that time too.

So, in general, I don't seem to have much interest/nostalgia for games of that era. I didn't get current again until I went to college and the PS2/Xbox/GCN generation hit.

I adore the N64, I like it's controller and I enjoy it's library the most of it's generation.

But I have to agree with Elkin from earlier in the thread that I just never managed to really enjoy the PS2. There's loads of good games on the thing, but I just have zero passion for it. Maybe it's the way everything looks dim and dark, as if the video signal is too low. Or maybe it's the Playstation controller, which I've never been much of a fan of.

I dunno, a lot of that darkness on PS2 seems to be from playing on TVs that weren't necessarily set up for it. When I played on my old Bravia set, everything looks dull, but my new Samsung, everything looks great. It also looks excellent on a CRT.

Maybe it's me, but the PS2 does often seem to have a particular palette, which does tend towards muddier, more muted colors. Not 100% of the time, and not really in a way that's inherently negative, there's just kind of a "PS2 look" to a lot of titles on it. /shrug


Anyway, once I don't really get is Virtual Boy. I had one back when it was new-ish. Got rid of it, and sometimes think maybe I shouldn't have...but there were basically no games available where I was. I guess it's a novelty, and has fairly few games to actually collect, but as something to actually want to play I don't see it.
