This doesn't answer your question and you probably already know this but...

Most first-party (and plenty of third-party) Atari 5200 games were also on the Atari 8-bit line of computers (as cartridges). These are essentially identical graphically; the big difference is that they use "normal" 2600-style controls.

Really, the only negative about the 5200 is the controls. It's a big hurdle, granted. The game library itself is (theoretically) pretty solid, but so many titles end up difficult to play effectively.

I modded my 7800 to composite, so much cleaner video now. Have not made the move on my 4 port 5200, the RF auto switch single power cord so unique. The 7800 has classic arcade games with exclusive two player simultaneous mode. Try Asteroids as a Space Wars game.

The ludicrously large trackball controller makes a good conversation piece I guess.
That trakball is what makes the 5200 games stand out, the ball is arcade "regulation" sized. Every console is worth discovering, especially when you go for the exclusives or the specialized controller such as the trakball.

Few very good 5200 games to try include Star Raiders (exclusive beside Atari 400 version), Space Dungeon (twinstick exclusive), Ball Blazer (better then 7800 for the stick float), Choplifter (analog stick float like the Apple II), Galaxian (sideways two speed), Space Invaders (sideways two speed) and of course all the Trakball games. Two not exclusive, but make good use of the analog stick; Gorf (ridiculous fast instant placement of ship) and Defender for arcade perfect, the quick hyperspace keypad and ship reverse thrust control.

Throw in all the home brews and 8 bit Atari computer conversions such as Shamus, Beef Drop, Necromancer (another idea float stick game) and others coming out at Atari Age. Top off with the SD Cart and a collectable from history stand point the 5200 Tempest cart.

*Yes Microcabin made some nice games for it. Exceptions don't prove a rule however.
You stole my answer.

CRT, you almost have made me interested in trying out the 5200.

I am familiar with the Tempest 5200 story, but I really feel like playing anything in that series after playing the Jag game with a rotary controller pales in comparison...

The 5200 trakball does a pretty good emulation of the spinner. Track by track precise movement to very rapid acceleration and instant stop for perfect tight control. Resolution of course not up to the vector arcade, but not bad. Sound is identical due to same pokey chip of both arcade cab and 5200.

I would say the one stand out 5200 game would have to be Star Raiders for Atari home system exclusive and utilizes all the buttons of the 5200 controller keys. The decades old retro game that needs recoded for new systems. Just updated Wiki which did not list the 5200 version.

EDIT
There is a newer Windows version! Mixed reviews of newer version, pales compared to original.

Oh, yeah. Anyone remember this?

Thing is, it bombed pretty hard, so I don't know if it had "appeal" at all.

I have a HyperScan. I just have no controller, power cord, games, or cards. Picked it up at a retro store in college for $5. Had no idea what it was.
