Re: You gotta try this new game. It's called Minecraft.
I have it on PC and Xbox One. I actually got them both free. And strangely, I still even have ANOTHER code for the PC version that I got free as well. Haha. So yeah, I owned three copies of this game that I've never really played.
My inclination is to stick with the PC version. Mouse and keyboard is comfy, and like I mentioned it has VR support. The only reason I even installed the Xbox One edition is because it offers split-screen co-op in case my wife is interested in messing around with it.
What's involved w/ setting up a server for us?
As far as "beating the game," how does that work? I guess I assumed it was just a "build stuff forever" game. Didn't realize there was any ultimate goal.
Is there a specific starter guide or FAQ you'd recommend? I was trying to find a simple and good guide on Amazon, but there's like 1,500 Minecraft books listed haha.

Whatever you do, do NOT buy a physical guide. The game is constantly updating and those books get outdated fast. I suggest just heading here
as for setting up a server you can either rent one for a monthly fee or set one up on your own pc. I can put up a dedicated pc for one, but it is an old pc so it probably won't support too many people.
EDIT: As for the actual end game content, it involves finding an incomplete portal and gathering the materials to finish it, go though it and defeat the ender dragon. That is the simplest way to put it but I can assure you a lot goes in to that.

Thats right uninstall it and go try and play Dwarf Fortress again...
Honestly, I got by early on when talking to a friend who ran a large Minecraft server. Sadly it never clicked with me, I did play it after I played Terraria, but it helped me understand why so many people love it. It did lead to some interesting lunch adventures on my telephone when I got the android version for free.

I'll be honest - I get the impression that it's really not for me either. So yeah, more than anything I'm just interested in getting to see enough stuff to help me understand and appreciate why it's such a huge game.
In fairness, I didn't really enjoy Terraria or Starbound all that much either. Though this being first person is more appealing to me. And the VR support is interesting.

The game is definitely more enjoyable with others. No question.noiseredux wrote:I'll be honest - I get the impression that it's really not for me either. So yeah, more than anything I'm just interested in getting to see enough stuff to help me understand and appreciate why it's such a huge game.

I have it just for PC, never grabbed the mobile version. I played it fairly well for a few weeks but then I kind of got confused and from that very bored. I couldn't figure out how to craft certain basic things and ended up buying a used guide at half price to get the basic ideas down. It then led me to believe I have the worst luck ever because certain staple goods to make stuff didn't show up anywhere I could find on my map. I tried making a couple more spots and same results on some stuff, not others, so rotten luck again. Eventually I just put it down even if I did find it pretty interesting. I never could find that very useful red dust among a few other key components for making stuff newer than the dark ages period as far as goods go.

Red dust is found deep below and is insanely common. Your problem may have been that you weren't digging far down enough. What other materials were you having a hard time finding?Tanooki wrote:I have it just for PC, never grabbed the mobile version. That, and you have to understand the importance of boring from the overworld directly down in a massive hole. You know, stripmine the planet.BogusMeatFactory wrote:The game is definitely more enjoyable with others.
