Given a choice, always best to use a pressed disc over reading a CDR to save wear and tear of the laser eye on any game console. A CD-R burn of the microscopic pits in the dye will not be the same tight quality level of a pressed disc. In addition, some Dreamcast burned CD-Rs have music and video removed to fit the game data from the larger GD-ROM disc.

So, any one has a launch Dreamcast or a brand new one?
How well do they hold? The problem with buying used is that you have no idea what kind of abuse the system had or how many prior owners. I also heard Dreamcasts are starting to die left and right... not sure if true...

I just checked eBay for Dreamcast games. Prices seem to be north of $30...
with such demand, maybe publishers should make new prints

Regardless of CRTs guide (which, upon examination, doesn't actually support his assertion well), there is no study or collection of evidence that using burned discs has any meaningful impact on the life of your system. Extra wear and tear will be minor so long as you are already taking care of your system and preferring properly packed game images.

Here's a snarky past post of mine that also addresses this. viewtopic.php?f=1&p=822979#p822979

I'm going to side with CRT. There's been enough stories over time about the lower end quality CDRs where they can cause additional wear and tear to the laser or at least the pot settings on the inside or more grinding to the motor as well, but I'd argue it's minor yet cumulative. Going years back I saw enough people who played DC day and night who were crooks just running those terrible 90s/00s burns, the ones with the data splattered all over the place out of order because of hatchet job removal of audio/FMVs to fit to a disc. People ended up having to open their system and tweak things, or if they were impatient or didn't care as it was cheap, tossed it and replaced.

If it wasn't an issue with the DC, why was there a project done after so many years (this decade) by two groups no less who took all the old game disc originals and did new dumps. The idea of these dumps were to remove NO info but use modern tools to recompress the video FMV primary first second the audio on the DISC so it would sit on a standard 700MB CD. Also in doing that they would retain the original order of data, or if they found by design the game perhaps would run around a bit to grab data, they'd re-org the data in a more linear fashion which in turn not only put less wear on the drive, some games would load up faster than a retail disc.

Seems like a lot of effort for smoke and mirrors and hallucination that some people would go to those amounts of work to re-burn an entire library of games and individually tweak every single one of them to their best or superior to retail read/write values.

RCBH: I have one from October 2000 so it's over 16 years old and it runs like new still with no problems. Only issue was a dead internal battery so I tore it open, removed the board, desoldered the solid battery/metallic holder and put in a bracket to hold a replaceable battery for future easy restoration. :) I only got it days before Christmas, so I don't know a lot of the history on it. The memory cards all had data going from 2000 into 04 or 05 so it got a lot of use for around 5-6 years but it could have been stored since in the box I found it in.

IDK, I just kinda laugh at the whole thing about burned games. I've never played anything but legit releases.

The problem, tanooki, is that there are only stories. Anecdotes are what the antivaxers use to try to connect autism to vaccines. Stories don't give us reliable data. I have nothing against people who want to "play it safe," but the scare stories to try and influence other people have no place. As for the folks who repack DC releases, they do it to reduce load time and noise. That's it.

Burned CDs kill Dreamcasts is superstition until proven otherwise.

Unlike anti vaxxer nuts, I could make the same argument at you couldn't I? Do you have any hard industry evidence on how a burned low quality consumer disc with shoddy data on it won't shorten the life of a drive working right? At least with those morons there's proof that vaccines don't cause autism or whatever the mental disease of the month is with those twits.

To be clear I do have burns, just 3, just like 15 years ago I had that many too. Not against them, but I do like to buy real stuff when it's affordable and doesn't require a mod or other hoops to jump through.

just to add my personal experience, I have used burned games for years and years on the same DC, and I have never experienced any issues that would cause me to think that my DC life has been compromised.

So, marurun, how do you know if the images are properly packed game images?

Yeah, having no proof that something exists sure does mean it exists.
