So Pocket Fighter was on sale on PSN - I didn't even realize this was a PSOne Classic as its never been on sale that I've caught. I probably hadn't played this since 98, but it was cool to add to my digital PS1 library on the PS3.
Of course then I realized it's on the Alpha Anthology on PS2 : /

Re: How is your PSOne/PS1 gaming going?
I didn't feel like creating another topic... so here goes:
I just got myself a copy of the 1st Growlanser game, with plans of playing through it with a translation guide. I wanted to try out a vcd player add on, which I heard could boot imports. When the game booted right up, without requiring a legit disc 1st, I thought, "that was way too easy". So I took the add on off and was shocked that the game still loaded up from a cold boot.
I actually got the system in a lot of "as-is untested" systems. Did I just luck out and score a working modded system? I guess I could burn a disc and see if it loads as well, but I refuse to open the system unless completely necessary to find out. I also have always had reservations about using burned copies on consoles, as I don't trust the laser to hold up as it is.
I got the system(s) as a PSIO candidate, but ended up using a 1001 model with a dead drive instead of this 7501 that is possibly modded.

Re: How is your PSOne/PS1 gaming going?
It sounds like you may have scored one with a modchip. Nice job!
I tried to go the boot disc route, the one where you put a spring into your console to keep the disc sensor depressed and swap in a non-legit disc. The swap itself was pretty easy, but I never could quite get the burning process to play nice with my system. It would always skip on XA audio and FMVs. While I could have tweaked with the potentiometer, the system worked far too well with my legit discs to risk touching it, so I left it alone.
(Seriously, I had almost all the great RPGs on the system legit, so tinkering with it was an absolute no-no.)

Yeah but now you have it on a device that natively outputs HDMI. The PS2 has a great library but the hardware has aged really poorly.retrosportsgamer wrote:So Pocket Fighter was on sale on PSN - I didn't even realize this was a PSOne Classic as its never been on sale that I've caught. Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
Re: How is your PSOne/PS1 gaming going?
I would normally say that, but PS2 looks quite excellent on my 4K Samsung. Much better than the Wii, actually. I'm pretty sure it comes down to the Wii having pretty low quality component output, especially compared to the Wii. I thought it was all the flicker filter, and to be sure, some of the issues are that, but more is just that the component output just isn't that great. (I hear that late models have good component, almost GC quality.)
Sadly, my PS1 is stashed, because I can't get component out of it with my current setup. So I use my PS2 for them instead... assuming I'm even playing on the actual system.

Yeah, I guess I answered my own question. It's was just (pleasantly) unexpected. I may just have to start an import collection now.Sarge wrote:It sounds like you may have scored one with a modchip. Nice job!

Been thinking about Vib Ribbon lately.
Actually, my other "Good/Working" system seems to be struggling to play lately. Not skkipping video, but takes a while to load in games. I might have to look into laser tweaking myself.

A belated response, but: yes, this is very true. There's a convenience factor, plus all the memory card options built into the PS3. Great system for PS1 playing.Flake wrote:Yeah but now you have it on a device that natively outputs HDMI. Re: How is your PSOne/PS1 gaming going?
Damn, guys. When did PS1 games get so pricey? At least here in PAL-land.
Now, granted, I know the desirable games like Castlevania, the Final Fantasys, obscure JRPGs etc. will all command a slightly higher price, but I'm talking about common-as-muck, fun games, that I used to be able to pick up in games shops for a couple of quid (that's a couple of dollars for you US guys) a few years back and there would be hundreds of copies. Games like the Crash Bandicoot games, Spyro the Dragon etc.
£25 BIN on Ebay for the first Spyro game? Are you having a laugh?
I was planning on bolstering my PS1 collection and figured I'd get a few games I want for a decent price, but nope. Crash 3 and Spyro 1, two games I fancied (and used to own - which I paid practically nothing for back in the day), would cost me at least £40 without stalking auctions to get a better price.

Buy it now prices on some consoles went a bit nuts lately, but you can still get decent prices with some persistence.Reprise wrote:Damn, guys. When did PS1 games get so pricey? At least here in PAL-land.

It's weird which consoles have increased too. The super common PS1 is on it's way up, as is the previously dirt cheap SMS.
But NES games, a console which has always been a bit pricy here, haven't really changed price much in the last 5 years. I got a bunch of NES stuff recently for prices that were relatively reasonable.
No idea whats driving the odd PS1 and SMS booms. Especially PS1, those things sold so many units It's amazing the games are all a quid.
