just studying some zoology for a test i have tomorrow and i came upon the following:

The homeotic gene Pax-6 is responsible for the formation of an eye-producing region near the midbrain. Products of another gene, Sonic hedgehog, suppress Pax-6 expression at the midline, thus forming paired, lateral eyes. In mice, genetic manipulations that produce an absence of Sonic hedgehog result in formation of an unpaired, median eye."
