Why do you buy new games? And don't get me started on preor

Post by chupon »

I just don't understand why people continue to buy new games? Prices on most games drop super quick. As soon as you open the wrapping you've lost value. Is it just to keep up with everyone else because it's not like people on this website dont have a backlog of other games to play.

I just bought Far Cry Primal PS4 for $12 from a pawn shop. It's basically minty. No way I paying $60 for this five months ago.

I figure if I'm smart I'm able to get 4 to 6 amazing used games instead of 1 new one.

So why throw money at new games? Why pre-order? Why expedite shipping?

Total waste of money.

Around 2013 I bought a few brand-new Nintendo 3DS games because I had more disposable income than usual and I wanted to treat myself. I didn't exactly do anything crazy like buy one of those $100 special edition games with a collectible statue and bonus DVD or whatever. Although, I did pay a scalper $56 for Fire Emblem Awakening back when it was in short supply. Nintendo seems to do that a lot, come to think of it.

I buy what I will actually play. It makes me happy. So spending $60 on a new release doesn't bother me since I don't binge and stockpile unplayed games anymore. I guarantee you that I wasted much more money buying a bunch of cheap games I never touched.

I rarely buy games new and that's been the case for several years now. Like it's been said, it's so easy to scoop up "ultimate" editions 6 months or a year down the road with all the DLC and extras, for a third of the price. Or sometimes you'll get compilations and bundled packages too.

There's always a few exceptions and some big games I want to play asap, but that's only like 3-5 a year probably.

Now that I have the income to buy games new, I try to do so to support the game if it's a series I love or on a system I love.

Not a really wise question. That's like basically asking the flat questions of.

Why would anyone buy ____ new?

The snarky answer would be if no one bought new, no one would bother producing anything at all as there would be no need or profit in it. Perhaps people like things others haven't soiled with their dirty bodies/hands? Maybe if it's a luxury item they want to support the maker in them making fine goods so they continue to afford to make more. Could it be that some people are germophobes? Perhaps they have that gotta have an instant satisfaction need complex going on.

Personally I don't buy a lot of new anymore, but going with your gaming argument, there are a few developers who unless a game bombs will not lower the prices on a title for years such as Nintendo being the huge one. It took like what 3-4 years for WiiU game prices to drop after putting them in a ghetto re-wrap on that Selects line. Yet I get it, you can buy up some dumb yearly COD or EA Sports drivel and within a year they're worth 20% of that maybe. Some others just are so huge they just re-issue with the formerly twice the price add-in fluff for like $40 (vs $60 retail for new NEW.)

Most the time I'll buy a game new if I know the game will most definitely be something I'll get the value out of. Another case I mentioned already, Nintendo, since they are anti-price drop, so even used prices are barely below new so why bother if it's $5 maybe $10 off (I can beat that with a 20% prime discount.) And that's another reason, the prime discount a $60 game now is $48, and if you hate it, you can rapidly sell it and break even.

Hey now, I touched my copy of Ultraman: Towards the Future. Or rather, it touched me.

There's been a lot of touching going on with my copy of Custer's Revenge.
