Is The Last Remnant any good?

Post by Tancred »

It recently came out for PC and I might check it out once I finish playing The Witcher... or I just may go back and finish Anachronox.

Anyway, is it any good or is it the typical Square + JRPG game with an anti-social emo depressed main character, absurd romantic subplot that takes over the main plot halfway through the game, bad voice acting, cliched plot, stupid childish cutesy bullshit, etc. You know what I'm talking about.

The only JRPG games that I loved with all my heart have been the Xenosaga trilogy, FF6, and FF Tactics.

Other than Chrono Trigger and the 2 other titles mentioned above, I despise everything that has been developed by Square.

As for Enix, Star Ocean 3 was okay. I liked the plot but it was too tedious and I refused to play it any further (every time the plot had to move forward I was forced to walk two town back, go into some dungeon, fight boring battles for 3 hours, find an item, go all the way back, and proceed). Radiata Stories was enjoyable. Never finished it and haven't played it in about 3 years. Not sure if my opinion will still be the same.

So what can I expect from The Last Remnant?

I didn't like it much on Xbox 360 it has interesting ideas for RPG battle system but it is filled with so many technical flaws and just a real average JRPG.. story is nothing special in my opinion.. The music is pretty good but Unreal Engine 3 just didn't seem to work. Then again, JRPG games just for me haven't been as good in a while besides FFX, XII.. and PS1 era 8)

I'm trying to decide between this and Infinite Undiscovery myself. Both are pretty cheap now, and it'd be nice to have another JRPG on the 360.

I hear a lot of the technical issues in the 360 version of Last Remnant, can be resolved by installing the disc to the HDD.

I would go with Last Remnant. I played through Infinite Undiscovery, and it was rather disappointing. It's very short, and you can only control one character, the characters that aren't the protagonist are always controlled by the AI. The item creation was OIK, but I felt like the game ended before it could really be useful. THat being said, if you have the chance to own it for <$20, I would say it's worth it, just that I would get Last Remnant first.

i dont think you will like it just because you seem to dislike most jRPG's. just got it myself on a chance. im a sucker for most JRPG's. as far as i have played its decent but the battle system sometimes doesnt make complete sence and can be abit boring. im only like an hour in although so i havent explored everything about it. i have read that the battle system gets alot better later on in the game (probally also as you learn how it works) and the story is decent now but i have also read that it gets really good later on. as far as i know i see no love relation yet besides the main charcter and his sister (no sexual love). the main character is more happy go lucky than anthing else buts nothing special so far. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A USB CONTROLLER OR A 360 CONTROLLER!!!!! the game is very anoying on the keyboard! another turn down is that you pick the locations on the map if you dont like this you might get over it quickly anyways. also the demo doesnt have all the bugs worked out as the final version does. its realitively fixed from what i can tell. the game looks nice and the music is great.

I believe my local game shop has both games for under $25.

Is there an easy mode for IU? I'm thinking maybe my wife could play through it too, assuming she could button mash if I help her out with equipment and item management.

There is an easy mode, but you can't play through the extra dungeon after you beat the game (Seraphic Gate). Not sure if that's a big deal for you though
