I actually beat the first stage through trial and error although I never figured out how to use my factory.

It reminds me of a less complicated but similar game to the 3 Gundam titles that came with my Sufami Turbo.

A nice Kikikaikai style overhead shooter/plaform exploration game. until I got it I also had no idea about the connection between this game and the SNES title Whirlo/Xandra no Daibōken. I'll have to seek out a guide for the multiple choice quiz sections though.
Nice! Check out the crunchy old ARPG on the Fami too, that's the first game in the series.

I forget if you have a PC Engine CD. If you do you should try Fray CD: Xak Gaiden, which plays pretty similar to Valkyrie no Densetsu.

I don't have the CD add on, sadly. To be honest I don't tend to bother with home consoles these days and mostly play handhelds but the tiny size of the PC Engine along with the minimal storage space required to collect Hu-Cards made sense to me.

That wasn't a factory; that was your HQ. Factories are separate, smaller structures. Sometimes you start with one, more likely you need to capture one. Interesting things to understand about factories:

1. Units inside a factory are deployed with full HP
2. You can put a unit into a factory to take advantage of the above
3. Capturing a factory captures all units in it

You have a CoreGrafx system, right?

Excluding shipping, if you shop around (might have to get the stuff from more than one place) I'm thinking probably in the region of $120 to get an IFU with power supply and the CD-ROM² unit. And that's probably including only the basic system card.
I've seen the IFU's alone (excluding shipping) go from about $20 onwards, on eBay.

Even though you wouldn't need a Super System 3.0 Card with these, going the Super CD-ROM² route might prove much more expensive. As well, those are almost always plagued with bad caps. With the CD-ROM² at least (for the most part) your worry might "only" be that middle gear. :P
If you're going to get one, preferably get a unit that has had that already replaced.

It's something I might get at some point but the convoluted process of hooking the CoreGrafx up to all of that stuff would be off putting enough if it wasn't for the worry of failing capacitors, import taxes and the very real prospect that I'll be making another big life move in a matter of a few years (likely back to Europe).

The Core was a good investment for me because it's so inherently portable and fifty hucards take up less room than even a modest collection of 16 bit console carts.

Getting back to the games, I'm now up to stage 116 of Populous. I had read that it had 500 stages but I've read elsewhere that the PC Engine port only has 199. Can anyone confirm?

I've been playing Kato and Ken (JJ & Jeff to TG16 players) quite a bit too. It didn't look that appealing to me originally but once I realised it was essentially an offbeat Adventure Island game with plenty of hidden things in each level I started really enjoying it. It's crushingly difficult though. I still haven't made it off the first Field yet...and I read there are eight! I did make it to the boss though. This system sure loved putting huge sprites in its games.

Yeah, I'd say so.

Decent list but some of those games cost an arm and a leg unfortunately.

One of the most appealing things about the CD-ROM is its region-free-ness. The Japanese scene is an absolute goldmine.

Yeah, I'd say so.
There's a distinct lack of Spriggan on this list.
