Street Fighter 2 CE console comparison - 16-bit showdown

Post by marurun »

Someone from a TG-16 oriented forum I frequent put up a massive comparison last year. It compares the Street Fighter II'/CE/Turbo ports for Super NES/Famicom, Genesis/Mega Drive, and PC Engine/TG-16 (no official US release). There are copious pictures, some videos, and descriptions. He uses Japanese system logos, so be on your guard. Also, in a few places he used the "HE" logo for the PC Engine. The order is usually fixed PCE/SFC/MD, but sometimes he breaks that order and uses a different one, so look for logos/labels to be sure you know which pics are from which systems.

This is a comparison only suitable for the real nuts, like me :) So if you've a burning interest, dig in!

These comparisons are always fun. They are a bitch to make mind you, but seeing the differences in versions is simply neat. I tried to make one for Bubble Bobble in the past, but after trying to find the 14 versions of the game I knew about I gave up.

I'm going to admit now that this probably belongs in fighters, but I think Street Fighter II transcends mere classification as a fighter and is, truly, an experience. And since we don't have the category "Experience" I decided to put it in Whatever, because really, what is this but Whatever?

Damn, Next-Gen, you're tearing it up with the comparisons. First Cadash, and now this sweet link. Freakin' awesome. I've always wanted to do a Console Wars feature on TWG, pitting TG-16 vs. Genesis, and even SMS vs. NES, then keeping a running total score for the competitors to see who has the edge--at least when comparing the same games. With all this great writing out there already, and me being daunted by the necessary work to produce such a feature, it kind of feels like something that will never happen. Any article showing the scrappy TG-16 rivaling "next-gen" consoles is always a great read!

Well, you won't get any objectivity from me on that topic. The TG-16 is my fave 16-bit console, though I do have some love for the Genny and the SNES.

For some more comparative review goodness, check out these Side by Side reviews from Sega-16.com.

After reading this in detail it is fairly accurate. I like how he rips the SNES soundtrack a little, I just couldn't stand the composition or sounds used on that version. The MD FM synth was so much better and at least the PC:E had the right notes being played :)

IMO he gives the PC-Engine version a bit more love than the MD port. He spends a lot more time picking out minor shading problems on the MD port than pointing out missing content in the PC:E port. Also I think the PC:E color is very nice but at times it is just too bright. IMO both of these ports are very fun and weird as they highlight the best and worst features of any port.

I think the MD port is the one I like least, if only because I just can't stand constantly dealing with the poor quality sound effects. Capcom really screwed the pooch on that one. And if you consider that the PCE port was done on contract to NEC and both the PCE and MD ports were based on the SNES port, well, the results are still interesting. The PCE and MD both could have handled better ports. Capcom programmed very little on the PCE so it's understandable that port it weak. But Capcom put lots of games on the MD, so why the sound isn't better I don't know.
