I an on chapter 7... in hard mode.

Still loving the game and as things get more difficult, the need for healers is becoming apparent for some situations. Definitely starting to see the team dynamics come in to play for success in the dueling mode. Some of the ai I am fighting do a great job in using character buffs and special attributes to great tactical effect.

One thing does worry me though. As I progress through the game, the only way to get orbs are for very specific quests, completing a level for the first time in story mode and for logging in during the launch celebration. I think orbs will be insanely scarce later on and that could be a concern for long term play.

yeah, I can see that. I feel like (so far) the game is meant to be beaten (IE: Story Mode, Normal) without spending a penny. And the real IAP stuff is going to come from folks who get super hooked and want to keep playing deeper and competing after that.

Protip: If you want to manually unlock the potential of a character from 3 stars up to 4 stars, you need to get them to level 20. Do not level them anymore, because when you raise their potential they go back to level 1.

Raising their star rating seems to cost a ludicrous amount of feathers though, unless those can be obtained en masse someplace?

Participate and do well in the dueling seasons. They are only a week long and I will be getting over 1k with a poor performance so it is definitely possible. As you get better and get better heroes it should speed up.

OH it isn't pvp at all! You are fighting ai of teams made by players. Do it! You will only benefit from it! This seems to be the only way to get feathers in mass.
