Nonwhite/nonblack citizens are regularly asked where they are from, and responses like Chicago or Montana or New Jersey are often followed with, "But where are your parents from?" I don't get asked this. What if my parents had immigrated from England 40 years ago and I was first generation American? Because I am white I am assumed to have been here forever, but someone of a different color? Nope.

Also, found an interesting article on the Atlantic about susceptibility to false information/news. The gist of it is that social conservatives are more threat-attuned and are thus more likely to believe false information that poses some threat to safety or social order. Other kinds of false information are equally rejected or believed regardless of political orientation. This is consistent with other articles and studies I have read about threat perception and social orientation.

So you think that there is no valid reason for a group that exists to support minority issues to permit only relevant minority membership? You would take the social/political jaws of life and forcibly pry open that organization's membership and require they allow in any member, regardless of the group's purpose or goals?

Also, as per #4, there is no indication the white lawmaker was bullied in any way. Why did you indicate you think otherwise?

Really? Do you have a link proof of this and not a one sided article? I can see it as a curiosity question asked if one has an accent and not by the color of their skin. On a casual conversion I never ask where parents come from for any race, do not care. If I know a person such as a friend or neighbor it might come up when we are just shooting the breeze, certainly not in a malice way as you suggest. I think most people feel this way. Building the hate thru perceptions as you stated is why there will be continual divide.

So what is the harm in bringing everyone to the table? The Tennessee Congressman seemed earnest to me just wanting to represent his district. Though not bullied, he was refused to bring in a voice and that is wrong. On the other hand an assembly focusing on just one race are not representing ALL their constituents back in their home states.

5. #4 pretty well covers #5. They do this at my work these NRG groups. Anyone can join a gay group, womens group, veterans, amputee, whatever if they are that or not as it's about support. So when it comes to the CBC they seem more about negative reinforcement support than looking for inclusive positive change.

I posted that Litmus Test a couple pages back to get dialog on this sensitive issue. Nice to see well mannered solid comments concerning race in at least a few posts without judging another persons point of view. Having known about the test for some time, I was unsure how the reaction would be and held off posting it.

I kicked the idea around of holding back the spoiler until a later Reply, but that would have been unfair. I think the reactions would certainly had been much more passionate. When Time did that story concerning the "misplaced MLK bust", I though about posting it back then. It is absolutely nuts how so many of the News jumped on that. Do we also do this at times yell out racist just to brag that we are not racist?

I am curious and have questions for the ones that did look at the test tease.

1. Ask yourself honestly. What was your first reaction before opening the Spoiler?

2. With the spoiler opened, how did your reaction change?

3. Do past injustices justify creating unbalanced groups or situations such as shown in the Litmus test?

4. In that test showing a real event, Should that Tenessee White Congressman representing 60% black constituents be allowed to join the Black Caucus to have an equal representation for his district?

5. Should anyone be allowed to join any designated Caucus including Black, Asian, Hispanic, etc; if for positive purpose to get and give all the data for their constituents?

Maru -- No I do not feel there is a valid reason at this point in modern times to have such divisive implementation in place. It doesn't help bring things together but help keep them split apart. I think anyone should be allowed to join a group, I did not say they should be allowed to stay in it. If they are found to be an asset towards a specific goal, how white or dark they are shouldn't matter one damn bit. If they went in just to start crap, toss them to the curb. There are no 'races' just one, it's called human, and I wish race and color baiting types would get that through their heads. This isn't the 1950s or the 1850s anymore, but according to some, it might as well still be.

As per #4 -- going back to the CBC vs CWC bait and switch CRT did to make a point I got bullying from this bit of his quote "But shortly after being sworn in the following January, Cohen told another reporter that he dropped his bid after hearing from several current and former caucus members that whites need not apply." He approached many members about entry and they made him uncomfortable and made it clear white people were not welcome. Sounds like bully tactics to me.


And while I'm at it since I don't regular this thread anymore and haven't viewed it in months I'll add this which I'm sure will set someone off in here, but it is how it is.

It's a sad state we have to even be butthurt over the imaginary CWC when the CBC is something that's entirely ok because of history. History is the past, if you want to live there, fine, but how about live now learning from it and curb that shit. I didn't grow up in the south where I live now, it wasn't like that in Cali growing up so I'm not used to all this race division bullshit and it gets annoying as it just looks to me like black people whining to get their, at this point, unnecessary and undeserved reparations from a group of people who no longer more or less (outside of elderly) walk the earth anymore.

I think discussion, and action, on race are necessary as ongoing things. And we do sometimes have to revisit the core premises. But "thought exercises" like what CRT presented are usually red herrings. They typically attempt to construct a false equivalency for one primary purpose: baiting people into supposed hypocrisy. We are either exposed as racists for declaring skin color (devoid of context in the example) adequate for discrimination in one case but not the other, or embarrassed by the thinly veiled ruse while we stumble over ourselves for not having read all the way through. As a tool for more meaningful exploration of ideas like Sarge brings up, such as when is enough and where are the end posts, this example is unsuited. Those conversations are best started directly and free of any semblance of subterfuge or reductio ad absurdum.

I did not post the exercise an attempt to defame, just a prod reality check on how each person reacts. As Tannooki mentioned the wrongs of the past need to be remembered, but not make it the primary platform of how a majority of society is today. Yes there are racists and haters that need to be put down, but there are many good people that should not be put in that category.

Berkley as the "Free Speech" beginnings (no) wiped all that out by not letting a conservative speak. Terrible when an opposing view is met with such violence and destruction.

You really shouldn't have bothered. All you did was prove how far removed from the reality of today's ongoing oppression and racist attitudes towards minorities you are. You sound ignorant, as if because black people fought for and earned civil rights, they don't still deal with racism.

It's easy to point your finger at someone else's life and make opinions up about how it is when you never have to actually experience it. There is a certain stink of whining when you are so very concerned about someone getting "unfair" benefits, rather than focusing on your own life. So it's a bit ironic that you are calling people out for whining.
