Well, I'll put it this way... if Nintendo is still publishing 3DS titles after 2017, I'll be very surprised.

Pokemon Duel looks interesting. A PvP deck-builder/strategy board game. Sounds a bit like Pokemon DuelYST!

Ok see that's like where I was going with the bit he quoted above your response. You don't want to scare people off the format too early. That's why you see them going one way internally and another externally. It's fine to get mobile developers and regular on board with a cheap android-esque device on the inside and push for that portability that can upscale for the TV (like Shield.) But you don't do that public. Public you don't want to fragment too early and kill off 3DS sales. They're just now putting out another N3DS with the pikachu ink to it.isiolia wrote:I think Nintendo isn't wanting to discourage 3DS sales, just like they didn't announce the DS as the GBA's successor.
Though, I also think they're going to refine (or fragment) the Switch platform, since the launch setup seems a lot like that of the Xbox One and bundled Kinect.
What might wind up being interesting is how they're spinning a chunk of the online services to a mobile app instead of the Switch itself. If they actually have an account-based digital marketplace in the works, maybe it'll bleed over onto mobile devices.
What I do see is in 2017 or 2018 (probably 18) them strongly at that roll of the year pushing to kill it. But what they do then is genius (or obvious) you make a new Switch SKU. You sell that sucker for $50-75 less and don't sell it with the dock, or perhaps pack in Mario or Zelda on the internal storage (and due to their size constraints) along with a fairly meaty microSD card in the slot (like 64GB perhaps or 128 based on some contractual deal they can work up.) In the case of the bundle, no price drop, and you get a retail(d/l version) of the game like they do with 3DS annoyingly and more memory to store it.
That to me would make the most sense. Give 3DS another couple years, ween them off it in 2018. Then make one (or both) of those imaginary SKUs I said where you can just get it as a handheld (which is fine with the built in joycons and kickstand) for a price reduction, or remain price flat and throw game+msd card in there of some size.

It's interesting so far. I haven't spent a lot of time with it (it was down yesterday), but it looks like it'll be fun once I get the hang of it.noiseredux wrote:Pokemon Duel looks interesting. A PvP deck-builder/strategy board game. Sounds a bit like Pokemon DuelYST!
Not sure yet how much I like their little battle-system, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

yeah I tried to play Pokemon Duel last night, but after 15 mins of time-outs I figured the server was way too slammed to bother trying.

They were doing maintenance, apparently. You should have no problems today, I'd imagine. It loaded right up for me this morning.noiseredux wrote:yeah I tried to play Pokemon Duel last night, but after 15 mins of time-outs I figured the server was way too slammed to bother trying.

There a genre or game you can really peg closest to how that new Pokemon Duel games works? I'm really turned off by SRPG type games and TRPGs as well. I don't mind a general board game layout depending how it plays, but of those types of games I can just barely deal with Ogre Battle, Fire Emblem and Advance Wars to a point, and Nectaris which is pretty much about it if it goes like that.

Hrm, there's really nothing I have that I can compare it to.
Basically, you start off with six Pokemon tokens and face off against an opponent with a similar setup. The Board is basically a 5x5 grid with lines designating set paths you can take. The objective is to get one of your tokens to the 'home' base of the opponent on the other side.
If one of the opponents tokens blocks your path, you can 'battle' them. But the battles are based on spinning wheels of chance (think Wheel of Fortune). Certain various sized segments of the wheel designate each tokens attacks and misses. If the attack is stronger than the opponents, the loosing token gets knocked off the board and sent to the Poke Center. But if you can surround your opponent on both sides, the opponent looses automatically.
For winning, you get gems that can be used to buy booster packs (Boxes with Pokemon tokens and upgrade items in them) and keys that can be accumulated to get an automatic booster. Boosters have a time attached to them. You have to wait for the counter to reach 0 before you can open it.
Honeslty, Tanooki, based on some of your posts, I'm not sure if it's going to be something you'll like

Yup looks a bit sketchy based on my lack of enjoyment of some types of game as it seems to be unique in a way but still entrenched in some of those styles which is why I asked.
