The movie Watchmen is the reason I stopped lamenting when a movie diverges from comic source material. I spent years complaining that superhero movies would be better if they were more like the comics. Then I got exactly what I asked for. Maybe movies are different from comics for a reason.

Oh, I also finally got around to seeing Rogue One last night. I enjoyed this much more than Force Awakens.

see, I don't exactly understand this. You're saying that Watchmen (movie) is a faithful adaptation of Watchmen (comic) and that Watchmen (comic) is great right? So... what's the problem then?

That the whole is somehow less than the sum of its parts.

Great Story? Check! Great Cinematography? Check! Great Music? Check! Great cast? Check!
Add them all up and you get a movie that's... pretty good.

Maybe I was expecting too much. Maybe the source material itself is not inherently cinematic; Watchmen reminds me more of a novel than a movie. Maybe the audience requires something different from a movie than from a comic. Maybe the bleak tone of Watchmen is easier to digest piecemeal over twelve issues than all at once in a movie.

To be honest, I don't fully understand it myself. I can recommend any adult read the Watchmen comic book without reservation. I can't say the same thing about the movie despite the undeniable fact that the movie is a slavishly accurate adaptation.

there was so much stuff in the book that I was like "this can't translate to a movie," and I think a lot of that stuff was what was left out: the Frontiersman comic for instance. Or even the guy at the news stand. Maybe all that is in the 4 hour cut. Not sure.

Anyway, I get what you're trying to say... I just felt differently. But I think you're also kind of agreeing that even if you felt the outcome was "pretty good," you really couldn't say that that movie could have been improved upon. Right?

The 4 hour version is almost an exact copy of the visual novel.

is it deleted scenes, or does it mix the live action stuff w/ the visual comic stuff?

That's a good point. I cannot think of a single change that would have moved this film from "pretty good" to fantastic. I certainly don't think it needs to be much longer. 163 minutes is pushing my attention span as is. Zach Snyder did everything right, yet I'm not in love with the final product.

Maybe it was just a bad fit from the start. Take a slow, plodding, depressing nihilistic story about the follies of humanity and impending nuclear annihilation. Then turn that into a big loud fun superhero movie. Can't do it, can you? To be perfectly fair, I couldn't do it either.

again, personal opinion but the fact that he made a movie out of a slow, plodding, depressing nihilistic story and kept it faithful is exactly what I loved about it. My wife said at around the 1 hour mark, "this doesn't even feel like a superhero story." Y'know? I mean the movie was big and loud... but totally not fun. It was dark, sad and actually difficult to watch at moments. I think the success was in NOT trying to tone it down and make it fun.
