Yeah, it's dated as hell. But it's fun once you get used to it. I still wouldn't play it immediately after playing Quake on a modern computer at 120 fps in 1080p.

As a kid I loved the Sonic series (and I still do) but the Adventure era games aren't quite as good as they used to be.
I think Sonic Adventure unfairly gets a lot of flak, but I'll freely admit that it hasn't aged well. I think that some of it's flaws can be forgiven because of it was the first truly 3D Sonic games. Plus it has one of the best video game soundtracks I've ever heard.
Sonic Adventure 2 had a lot of bad design decisions and a storyline that seemed well-written when I was eight, but in retrospect it's full of plotholes. Chao garden needs to return though.
Sonic Heroes is even worse. The characters move as if their shoes were banana peels dipped in oil. The levels are repetitive and the characters are annoying and won't shut up. Plus they left out the Chao garden.
Shadow the Hedgehog was the coolest thing ever when I was eight, but nowadays the attempts to be hip are just laughably pathetic. I don't think the gameplay is as bad as some people make it out to be, but being forced to play the first level ten times to get the true ending is awful.
Sonic 2006 is a game that I legitimately have nostalgia for. Crazy, I know. Obviously I can't defend this game, (except for the music, which is amazing as Sonic music usually is) and I haven't played it in years and frankly it can stay that way.
Sonic Adventure is a good example, most people who liked it likely over looked its flaws since everyone wanted there to be a Super Mario 64 version of Sonic.

For me, Sonic Adventure was always bad from the start. I remember my dad renting a Dreamcast for one of my birthdays back when it was new. I was utterly shocked and disgusted to see Sonic in a real life city, around real people, and hitting glitchy invisible walls sending me to my doom while dolphins jumped around. I had it for a sleepover and I think my friends and I seriously spent like 10 minutes with it, then immediately went back to N64 games.

I have no idea what some people were looking for then and now. The Adventure games are terrible. lmao

Maybe being two when I first played it has colored my view of Sonic Adventure. It was my first exposure to the series. I still think it's a decent game if you have a walk through so you don't have to fumble about in the hub worlds forever. Hub worlds we're a terrible idea, but as I said before it's acceptable for there to be a few missteps considering it was the first 3D game in the series on a brand new console. But frankly hub worlds had no business returning in the later games.

Why is everyone on Racketboy so old? It's almost as if most people don't care about games that are older than they are...

A friend and I did a let's play of Sonic Adventure last year. I enjoyed it for the most part but I'd have a hard time recommending it to anyone who isn't already a Sonic fan.

On the flipside, I think the first dual joystick FPS I played was Timesplitters, and it was ultra weird at first. But... fast forward to now and it's second nature.
Goldeneye was a dual stick game though, right? (perhaps the only one on the system).
I mean, it has a setting to use 2 controllers... not an option for multiplayer, but works for the main game well enough.
I can't remember if it let you invert the axis though (only thing that trips me up in the Turok games).
...just another lost soul...

Sonic Adventure wasn't a great game, but you have to give it some props for setting up some great visual moments. In stage one the part where you have to flee a killer whale while it tears up the floating walkway behind you is actually quite stunning to watch.

I'll admit I'm pretty bad at it, I much prefer how the later NHL games for MD & SNES controlled.
This is the only acceptable preference.
