Sorry this is a double post, just trying to spread out my tentacles

Psyched to announce our return to the stage after a 6 month hiatus to find and train a new bassist. This is the annual "Anti-Valentine's Day Show" brought to you by Posidemic Entertainment, a local promotion operation. We'll be in new form with our new bassist. It's gonna be a great show. If you're in CT come check it out, or tell your friends in CT.

We're also working on new recordings. We will be upping the quality from our demos drastically. But you can get a sample of our antics here

I got a ukulele and holy shit do I love it. So much easier to play than any other stringed instrument.

PICTURE PLEASE. :D

That's cool. I've never played a ukulele, now that I think about it. What made you get one? Or, did you just happen to acquire it somehow?

Funny that you bumped this thread out of the blue because I was just about to. I got a Fender Standard Jazz Bass (made in Mexico). The normal MSRP is $600, Guitar Center had them on sale for $450, so I decided to get one. This will be my first bass that isn't complete garbage (I'm not a bass player). They didn't have any in stock, so I have to wait for it to ship.

My bass came in UPS last night. Unpacking it was awesome. I haven't bought a new (as in brand new, factory box) guitar/bass since I was in high school. I wont count the $90 P-bass I bought some years back, as it was such a cheaply made instrument that it's not nearly the same experience. In fact, a week before I purchased the bass, I was in Guitar Center demoing this model. They had one in stock, and it was the floor model I was playing. They told me I could purchase the floor model if I wanted. It was in like new condition, nothing wrong with it at all, but I really wanted that experience of opening up the factory box myself. It's been a good 15 years since I've done that. So after I made up my mind, I went back to Guitar Center and had them order one and ship it to my home. I'm glad I went that route.

This is the best bass I've ever owned, I couldn't stop playing it last night. The first bass I owned was an Ibanez Soundgear P-bass, the lowest end model. I sold it when I was poor in high school so I could fund other guitar gear.

I missed having a bass, as I like to do my own multi track recordings, so around the time I graduated high school I bought a shitty $90 (shipped!) P-bass off eBay, as that's all I could afford at that time. Very cheaply made. Perfectly playable, no problems setting it up correctly. But cheap bass = cheap sound. I also accidentally ordered the P model when I wanted the J model, and I just kept it as that was easier than the exchange for such a cheap instrument. I bought a genuine Fender J bass bridge pickup that I was gonna retro fit into it, but never got around to doing that. I decided it wasn't worth the time to do it on such a cheap bass.

So some years after that, a friend of mine sold me his old Ibanez 5-string. Some lower end model, nothing special. I think I gave him around $100 for it. I've owned it for years now, and I still haven't played it. I only wanted a 5-string in case I need one to record with, otherwise I want to play on a 4-string.

I never had a proper bass amp, being that I wasn't a "bass player" and only wanted one to record with. I would record DI, and if me or someone else was playing live with a group I would just use a DI box with my PA. So a couple of years ago I was able to score a Fender M-80 1x15 combo amp at a pawn shop. At first glace, it seems like "some shitty bass amp Fender made for only a few years then discontinued," but it's actually a decent amp. It gets great tones, and the built in chorus effect is fantastic.

Long story short, this is the first time I've owned a decent bass and a decent bass amp so I'm pretty stoked about it. :D

Haha maybe I'll post a pic later but it's nothing special. Harmony brand.

Mt parents actually bought it for my daughter who is 3 and musically inclined but I snatched it up for the time being.

Bass is my "main" instrument, though I've never been particularly good. I've been practicing bass, keyboard, and ukulele lately. Regular 6-string guitars completely confuse me, I just find them difficult as hell. My daughter has started playing acoustic guitar.

I gotta level with ya. I can't see myself ever getting a banjo.

I've noticed that guitarists have a much easier time playing bass than bassist trying to play guitar. That's just a general observation I've made from all the years I've been playing with other people. I always figured it was because, for example, playing single notes in a pentatonic scale is something a guitarists already knows how to do. They only have to adapt to the larger scale neck, which is surprisingly very easy to do.

A bassist trying to play guitar on the other hand, they have to struggle with their fingers in these really weird positions needed to fret all sorts of different chords. Something it took the guitarist hours and hours of practicing to get the muscle memory for.

Me, personally... Guitar is my primary. Any time I pick up a bass, it just feels like a natural adaptation. But if I play the bass for an extended period and then immediately pick up a guitar, the guitar feels VERY strange (and that's coming from a guitarist!). Going from guitar to the larger scale of the bass is easy. Going from bass to the smaller scale of the guitar just feels awful.

Of course, I'm not saying any guitarist automatically makes them as good at bass as a bassist. I'm only speaking of the basic playing techniques of each instrument. That, and it's different muscle strength and finger calluses. As a guitarist, I can only walk my fingers for so long (especially if I'm doing a lot of 8th notes or faster) before my forearm goes out. And I can only play for so long before my walking fingers start to hurt. Much like how if a bassist was fretting chords on a guitar for a while their fingers would start to hurt.

That's awesome that your daughter is playing music at such a young age.

I don't know, banjo can be kinda cool at times. When I use to think of banjo, my mind use to automatically go to bluegrass and southern/country kind of music. But, for a well known example of banjo outside of those genres...

You'll get there. Can you honestly tell me you don't want to do this?

Anyone have familiarity with short scale bass guitars? Got to try an Ibanez one the other day and holy shit I loved it.

Short scale basses are fun to play, for sure. Never owned one myself, but always fucked around with them in instrument shops for kicks.

I think my next instrument purchase is going to be a baritone/extended scale 6-string guitar. I want to be able to rock lower tunings while still having good string tension for once.
