I was really surprised when I heard about this. Didn't this get a big E3 demonstration at the main MS press conference last year? It looked finished.

More than that, it was a big showcase the last two E3's for them.
Development started somewhere in 2013 directly after Wonderful 101.
So yeah, still a huge shock. I guess the irony is how they're still promising things like Crackdown 3 when I haven't seen anything on that.

I think the problem is that xbox just doesn't fit into microsoft's product line up anymore. They gave up the pc gaming space to valve which hurt them hard, the idea of media devices under your tv is dead, since we all have way better devices that do everything nowadays, and most of their expected future profits are from business or professional oriented services and devices.
I just don't see where a gaming console fits anymore in their company. Thus why keep spending a fortune on getting exclusives when they also pay way less dividends than Nintendo exclusives (by that I mean that people bought the 360 for the 3rd party support mostly, and with rare exceptions I don't think that Microsoft console games ever sold particularly well to be considered mega hits like Pokémon, Mario, grand tourism etc

Poor Platinum... This gets canceled, and now Zelda's going to launch within one week of NieR: Automata.

I kind of agree with this. If we are talking about the health of the Xbox brand and division, I think that the Xbox has never turned a profit for the company. Brand building during the original Xbox's run and the RROD issues with the 360 saw to it that the division was in the red with the launch of the One. The Xbox One's more costly hardware configuration (when compared to the PS4) and poor initial acceptance hasn't produced anything financially significant still.
I was kind of shocked when Scopio was announced. It felt like a reaction to rumors of what we now know is the PS4 Pro. I'm assuming here, but I think that upper management probably realizes at this point that Microsoft's dreams of taking over the consumer living room will not come in the form of a console. What we are seeing now with Scopio and the cross platform release plans on PC and Xbox One could be events already set into motion; investments that have to launch to justify their R&D price tag. Will we see the end of the Xbox brand? Probably not for awhile, but I can definitely see Microsoft testing the waters to migrate away from it.
In comparison, Sony is basically floating on top of the PlayStation brand and sales right now. They have gone from being primarily an electronics company to video game console company.
