So I picked up Ys Origin again after not playing for like a year. Apparently I made it to the Arthropod boss. Only he's now kicking my ass, because he's the first thing I need to fight after my year vacation. What am I missing? I'm trying to drop mines, but they don't hurt him after the first few. Do I need to hit those poison balls he drops into him? The biggest problem is that he goes fast enough that if I have trouble dashing he just pushes me along and kills me before I can get my shit together.

He's a BITCH of a boss, but the trick is to get on top of him and just wreck his shit from there. You've got to destroy his armor and then damage each section of his body IIRC. Destroying the shit he drops will make things a little less hazardous for you, but when I fought him, I focused on just keeping on top of him as long as I could and getting as many attacks in as possible before he knocks me off.

Totally forgot you can often get on top of bosses. I just kept running away, leaving bombs behind me.

Played a bit of Beggar Prince. It's actually a bit better than I was expecting. The battle system is a bit weird, though. You've got a certain amount of stamina, and you can attack as long as you have some left. Spells and regular attacks all consume different amounts. Once you exhaust your stamina, the enemies get to go, and they all draw from the same stamina pool. So it doesn't matter if there's six enemies or one, they're going to get up to five attacks in depending on what they decide to pull. This means you need to prioritize killing the most dangerous enemies first so you only take hits from weaker foes.

There's also a spell you get early on that is amazing. Conceal basically makes you invincible for a few turns. It will give you time to pound on regular enemies when you encounter tough groupings, or give you a few free shots at bosses. If you can find a spell weakness for bosses, you'll rip them to shreds; especially since so far, they've all been solo, which means your spell damage doesn't split up.

Magic damage scales with level, and also gets more expensive to cast as you level up. Your weapons also "evolve" as you level up. You don't actually purchase anything, all your equipment is found, and your items are used for trading as necessary. There's a nice spot in the first town where the basement has infinite Milk Candies for restoring 1/5 of your HP as a concession to not being able to buy items.
