Re: RPG Progress Report
Started my playthrough of Ys Book I + II for TGCD this evening while waiting for the SWITCH HELLA HYPESTREAM. Didn't quite get finished in the four hours I had to play, but I got halfway up the tower, so I reckon I'm about 80% through if memory serves from my Master System playthrough. Will finish that tomorrow and start Ys II.

Just beath the infamous seventh mission on Valkyria Chronicles and i had completely forgotten how bullshitty this mission really was. If you don't wait until the big tank reaches the third wall and have your troops placed correctly to avoid being slaughtered by really cheap scripted event then it's most of the time game over there.
It's not the sort of though that you get through and you are happy about it. It's the kind of though that leaves you empty and angry.
I remember that originally it was after this mission or after i intially failed the mission that i learned that you can actually save during the battles. The saving/loading is poorly placed in this game because you wouldn't think of looking the option from under the system menu.
And this is not something that happened just to me. There's are some people who even played the whole damn thing without noticing it.
EDIT: And i'm going to leave this gamefaq users quote here

"It's the scripted battles that are really obnoxious. The giant tank battle in chapter 7, and the plains battles. Where the first time you play the battle you don't know where reinforcements are going to magically appear at scripted times, but then the second time you try the battle, it's easy because you know exactly what to do.
The enemy generals must be pissed too:
"They took the bait, move in with the pincer attack."
"Wait, sir! The enemies have four lancers standing right next to our tanks with twenty command points built up because they had psychic knowledge we'd be here!"
"Well. Crap."
They shouldn't have these scripted times the enemy magically appears. All it does is maybe throw you a defeat with complete bad luck, only to easily obliterate them the second try because you know exactly what to expect."

Re: RPG Progress Report
Valkyria Chronicles is a fantastic SRPG. If it has any true flaw, it's that the game is too easy.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

I guess we have very different meanings for the word "flaw".
