De-listed games and content, your thoughts

Post by Juan Aguacate »

So I've recently been looking into playing some PS3 gems that I missed out on, and to my dismay there seem to be some cool games that have been released on PS3 that are no longer available anywhere. I wanted to play After Burner Climax, but apparently it no longer exists. And one game I recently learned of that I really really want to play is this little gem

Looks like a really fun little beat 'em up, but as it turns out, there is literally no way to play this game now. It's like it never existed. Now I'm lucky enough to have some stuff like Scott Pilgrim and the Konami arcade games, but it irks me that there's other cool games that once existed that I will never be able to play now

Plus DLC for some games, like Shinobido 2, can no longer be acquired. It's a bummer that none of this stuff is being preserved.

Shit like this is why hacking, dumping, and emulation are so important to maintaining vidya as a culture and art form.

This is probably the biggest issue I have with digital-only gaming. For example there were quite a few Android games I wanted to play at one time, but some of them were too much for the phone I had back then. After I finally got a phone powerful enough to play them, some of those games had been delisted. I simply cannot access them via the official means, period. They're just gone, digital dust in the wind. This issue is not exclusive to the GooglePlay store of course.

The biggest gripe for me is when they delist a game from your download history, or in the case of android users, say it's not compatible with the phone 10 times as powerful as the phone you had when it was first purchased.

It's just an overall issue I faced and will continue to face with my Xbox 360. The only game I have that was delisted (not from history at least) was GTA San Adreas. A bigger slap in the face is when you have the DLC of a game and it requires a patch to download and play it. What if you have no internet connection or the service is down?

That's the real issue. When they turn the lights off for good. Other than dumps and emulation, can you be sure to get a hold on some of the content in the future?

^like ChuChu Rocket. Y'all know that ChuChu Rocket used to be on Android? I mean, how brilliant is that? Yet, I don't have it.

Yeah the Android app neocompatibility issue is a legit problem. When I moved to a new phone, two of my games didn't support the newer OS, and the GooglePlay store wouldn't let me download them because of that. I had to sideload them to get them on there. And what do you know, they work fine.

my two three biggest Android compatibility heartbreaks:

1. XCOM basically works on nothing that I want to play it on. More specifically, it doesn't work on any of the Shield line. Which is garbage, since it will work on my (less powerful) phone. I have tried side-loading it on my Shield tablet and I cannot get it to actually install. Just throws error msg's.

2. Deathsmiles exists on Android. Over the past few years I have tried to run it on every Android device I can think of and it doesn't work on any of them. I get the feeling that the game itself is just dead - like I think it might need to download some install files, or dial home or whatever on the first boot up but that server is dead. No idea. Either that or it only worked on a very old version of Android.

3. I can't spell "compatibility," rather I have to let spell-check do the work for me every single time I try to type it.

3a. ChuChu Rocket.

I have ChuChu Rocket.

I didn't know it was delisted from the play store. It looks like it's still on the amazon app store however or so it seems.

I got Chu Chu Rocket thanks to humble bundle along with the other Sega games in that Android lot, maybe they still offer it. Just side load up their humble app on your device, pay and it will appear if it's there. Screw google for delisting that.

Avaliability being stolen away is my #1 reasoning behind my #1 reason I don't back digital download games unless they're insanely cheap (and still not thrilled either way) because YOU(I) lose control of what is paid for. You're given a license and when they decide to revoke it, you're screwed. Either in some cases they steal it from your account, or you miss out and it's gone.

I did find out about Afterburner Climax being wiped out years ago, bought it the day before they killed the Android release so thankfully I have it and it's fun.

Stuff like this is why I buy physical media and GoG over anything else first unless no other option is given. If a future one appears, if GoGconnect(from Steam) works good, if not wait on a 66%+ off sale and buy it twice as an insurance policy.
