AKA the source for thousands of vaporwave samples, haha.
Some folks are still making stuff kinda like this, and doing it well. Check out my man Boogie Idol - https://soundcloud.com/boogieidol

Groupees had another Synthwave bundle going, and I was impressed by these two albums so far.

Picked up that bundle too. Check out the Timecop/Division (same dude) stuff. I've had some of that for a while, and it's fucking great.

Will do, I'm definitely working my way through it all.

MOAR SYNTHWAVEZ

Been familiar with this dood for a bit, but only really sitting down and chewing into his tunes today. Amazing stuff that nails that airy 80s vibe and hits with force, complemented by a sweet aesthetic centered around badass machinery like jets and F1 cars. Not 100%, but I think he's a veteran too (not that it matters, but interesting trivia). His whole discography is currently $6 on his BC, and it's totally worth it.

Been hitting lots of Hank Williams lately. Mixed in with a little Corb Lund and William Clark Green. Have to skip certain songs (why oh why Corb did you record Brother Brigham, Brother Young?) like "the Rodeo's over", but otherwise that's what I've been listening to.

Ellington At Newport 1956 (Complete)
1956, As lame as this sounds, it was Amy Adams that got me to want this album. I mean Bradley Cooper was there too, but... there was something really great about that scene in American Hustle - about them commenting on how only Ellington would have the guts to start a song this way... at any rate it was enough to get me looking up details on the album and it's really kind of fascinating. Recorded live around the time that the big bands were being replaced by smaller ensembles, this was kind of a documentation of a performance where the Duke should fading away and instead he makes this gig a huge celebration. It's sort of a brave oblivion recorded here. And it worked. This record is an absolute must-hear if you're at all of a fan of Ellington's work. Or even if you're not maybe you should hear this in lieu of any Greatest Hits kind of deal. This "Complete" edition is kind of fascinating as far as archiving goes, and the liner notes are excellent. Though I have to imagine that this version's 40 tracks is a totally different listening experience than the original five-track album.

Gene Krupa/Buddy Rich
Krupa And Rich
1955, Unfortunately this album isn't at all what I wanted it to be. I really just wanted to hear a full album of drum solos back and forth. That might sound unappealing, but if you've ever heard a Krupa drum solo then you know it's really something insane. In fact, only one song on this (originally five-track) album - "Bernie's Tune" - features both Krupa and Rich. They each then get to lead on two tracks of their own. So it just kind of feels like the title here is misleading. I wanted to hear Krupa AND Rich, not Krupa THEN Rich. Y'know? And then the CD reissue tacks on two more Buddy Rich tracks so... this is kind of just a Buddy Rich album with some Krupa stuff thrown in. I don't know. It's weird.

The Mahavishnu Orchestra With John McLaughlin
The Inner Mounting Flame
1971, The Inner Mounting Flame was an instabuy once I realized this was the guy who played guitar on Bitches Brew. And it's one of those albums I revisit every few years, space out, enjoy it and then put it away. Which isn't really a glowing review or anything but it is what it is. That's just how this album fits in. It's not something I can pay close attention to - but also not something to ignore. It's kind of one of those crazy jammy albums that encourages your brain to just drift off. This is virtuoso stuff - and to be totally honest it sometimes dips too close into show-off territory for my taste. But it's still one of those records that I feel like is something anyone interested in jazz fusion needs to hear.

Weather Report
Black Market
1976, Oh man, I love this stuff. 70's funk-jazz or soul-jazz or whatever we want to call this. I love it. These are the sorts of records that anyone who's into stuff like trip hop or instrumental hip hop or well, whatever we're calling that stuff needs to hear. If you want to throw on some slick jazz that just really makes you nod your head for an hour - this is where it's at. This record also shows off those awesome 70's synths the same way something like Hancock's Headhunters album does. The thing about Weather Report and especially an album like this one is that I'll often kind of forget to even give it a spin - but once it's on I feel like I could listen to them all day.
Re: What are you listening to at the present? (genres helpfu
That's disappointing about that Krupa/Rich deal. Would be sick to hear them together on a full set of songs dueling drums back and forth.
