Anyways, anyways. Even if these places click lore wise later on and i gain more appreciation from that it doesn't really change how i saw them as places to explore. These areas just don't do it for me like the areas in Dark Souls 1.
Even the murky swamp areas kinda grew on me and i don't think were even single area on that game that felt weak (expect the empy PVP forest area)
This is the last game on the trilogy so it's kinda disappointing that the areas feel just okay.
What RPG are you playing right now?
Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
I think a good bit of that could stem from Dark Souls being the only game in the series that doesn't let you start warping between bonfires/lamps/etc right off the bat. Or, even once you can, let you warp to all of them. So it does serve to foster a much greater appreciation of how it all connects together, at least early on, and does ensure that you'll be running back through areas a fair bit. Also meant that the earlier areas (particularly) tend to loop around.
DLC aside though, post Anor Londo, it's a lot less consistent. I don't think most would make an argument for Lost Izalith, for instance, that isn't mostly based on lore.
Another consideration is that the first game might have stood out more due to the whole way it does things being new to you. Much as I enjoy DS3, I think it's fair to say that it doesn't do a whole lot new, and instead is kind of a best-of for the previous games. So if you're not finding it super fresh or compelling, it is kind of understandable too.

I think it's really more down to the fact that the locations arent as visually striking and "moody" and it kinda sounds like Motoi Sakuraba might have been burnout by this series because the soundtracks have been getting weaker since Dark Souls. Dark Souls 2 still had some good tracks but even the music from that wasn't noticable most of the time.
From Bloodborne i can't remember even single standout track and i played that game few weeks ago. Dark Souls 3 hasn't had any great tracks either.
Dark Souls otherhand had amazing pieces like the Sif Theme, Ancient Dragon, Gwyn theme and more. Of course the music in Dark Souls 1 wasn't booming there during most of the playtime either but you got those highlights now and then that really elevated the experience.
Dark Souls 3 still has chance to impress on the music department )and in general) but quite frankly i'm not expecting Motoi to deliver based on Bloodborne.
Of course the experience being as refresh this time around does have an effect and i'm not denying that but i do think that Dark Souls 3 is really just is genuinely lot weaker (so far at least)
But in the end of the day it's not like it's bad game. Even if the levels don't do it for me it still keeps me playing. I'm not exited about the game so far but it's not like i'm bored either.

Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
Motoi Sakuraba actually only did a few tracks for Dark Souls 3. Yuka Kitamura is arguably the main composer and I thought she did an amazing job bringing her own touch to it. I thought it was cool how he mostly did the first few bosses, then she takes over. So it was like the torch was being passed midgame.

Motoi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajq6MFS_ysM
Real different when you listen to it back to back haha.
I think Bloodborne had the weakest OST of the Souls games. It's great in game, but nothing really stands out. I think Motoi did his best on Dark Souls 1 and some bosses in 2. But as usual I can't help but love how different Demon's Souls' OST is, it's utterly obtuse compared to the more grandiose style the sequels took after.
Sublime magic entering my ear drums.
I'm really partial to the Fool's Idol theme. It's so soft and simplistic, but it's as creepy as it gets. Such a cool boss fight.

Oh he actually wasn't a main composer for this.....interesting (i guess i have to put extra attention to the music)
Demon's Souls OST is different but it's a amazing score too and one of my favorite ost's. I think the ost of that game is more reminiscent of the olden day's and it partially reminds me of what Kings Field 4 had.
I was just thinking before going to bed last night how i would like to hear "less orchestral" feeling music like that again in a from software game (give Shunsuke kida more job's god damn it)

Amazing game.
Yes, KF: The Ancient City is amazing. Aside from myself and you, I believe MrEco has also beaten the game and greatly enjoyed it as well.

I put an hour into Xanadu Next tonight, and I'm already in love with it. I literally only have one complaint with the game right now... but that has more to do with an old physical injury of mine, more so than the game design itself. Edit: Nevermind, I found a way to change the game's CFG file, so I fixed the problem I was having. No complaints now! If I weren't so tired, I'd probably stay up till 3AM playing this one tonight. Gotta pace myself a little here folks.

And no, I'm not playing the N-Gage version.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Yes, yes. Moar Falcom.
Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
Had to do a triple take there, thought I was looking at Vagrant Story and or then Breath of Fire 4.
Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
I gave myself two choices to play next. Okage HD or Valkyria Remastered and i felt that i should start with Okage but went with Valkyria instead.
And after playing it for little over 2 hour's i remembered why i didn't finish this game. I just recently did point out some of the flaws of the game in the new Valkyria game thread but for some reason i needed to experience them again.
I really do want to like this game and i feel like with the core idea you could make something great but this is just messy. There's several bigger design choices i really don't like and also lot's of little annoyances that ruin the game.
I seriously don't fucking get it for instance that why is it possible to FUCKING MISS. The game let's you save after moving a character so turning the game save/load hassle was a RETARDED idea.
It's okay in a strategy game to springle some possitive luck factor but a failure shouldn't be down to bad luck.
And again i have to say that i personally don't like that the game encourages rushing. I prefer moving slowly and eliminating everything but the reward system is set up in a way that if you move carefully and eliminate all the enemies then the exp reward will be lot lower because most of the exp is gained from the rank reward. It starts to get expensive to upgrade the units soon so you are in for lot of grinding if you don't rush and rushing just will give you headache on some of these missions on first playthrough. It's probably impossible to even get A rank on the first run on some of these missions because your characters simply don't have the reach for some of the objectives.
EDIT: I need to mention that there are other rewards that you can get by moving slowly that you don't get by rushing. Some of the enemy commanders have unique weapons so if you just rush for the goal you might miss those.
Though even that can be seen as bad thing because you cant replay story missions on the first run so you are at disadvantage if you miss any of the good ones so.........
