Re: NX Predictions Thread
Apparently we very well could finally be getting an official Mother 3 release in Western territories. Nothing official from Nintendo yet, but some fairly trusted have put out some stuff lately on possible leaks. I may play it again just to see what Nintendo's official translation is like, or if they changed anything drastically from the Japanese version.

Definitely not 9th gen. Hardware-wise, it'll belong more to mobile or microconsole timelines anyway.ElkinFencer10 wrote: What do yall think?
Might also be interesting, over time, to see how it does undocked - if the performance dip is big enough, it might be that some games will only offer limited features or modes. If that's the case, then putting it in the handheld category might not be ideal either.
My guess is that 8th gen and on will wind up with decimals, or the generation label might just cease to be useful. It's possible that MS and Sony may not do a clean break to an all-new platform again. 9th gen might simply be the (hypothetical) point at which the 8th gen launch models can no longer run new Xbox or Playstation games.

I definitely don't think it's fair to call the Switch a microconsole. I think it will be remembered down the line as a second 8th gen console, though I agree that, from a power perspective, the Wii should be thought of as a second 7th gen console and the Wii U a late 8th gen console.

I don't know... my way of seeing it is as a portable that has TV-out.ElkinFencer10 wrote:I definitely don't think it's fair to call the Switch a microconsole. Meaning to me it's a portable that can be displayed on TV, not a console that you can take on the go. I know I'm splitting hairs here haha.
I mean it is basically a Shield Tablet right? My Shield Tablet can be plugged into a TV and put in "console mode" so that you can use more than 1 controller on it. This seems to be the same kind of deal in my book, unless I'm missing something.
Re: NX Predictions Thread
That would be all kinds of awesome, and given they did give us Earthbound Beginnings it's not completely out of the question. I wonder if Nintendo would do all the work themselves or if they took Mato up on his offer for Nintendo to use all the work he and Jeffman put in on the fan localization.PartridgeSenpai wrote:Apparently we very well could finally be getting an official Mother 3 release in Western territories. Re: NX Predictions Thread
I agree in that I see it as a handheld that can output onto a TV rather than the other way around, but although there weren't handhelds for every console generation, I think of them the same way because I think of console generations in time frames as much as I do technology. For example, I count the 3DS and Vita as 8th gen handhelds. So whether it's viewed primarily as a handheld or a console is a moot point for me in discussions of generation.noiseredux wrote:I don't know... my way of seeing it is as a portable that has TV-out.ElkinFencer10 wrote:I definitely don't think it's fair to call the Switch a microconsole. Okay, yeah I get that. That makes sense.ElkinFencer10 wrote:I count the 3DS and Vita as 8th gen handhelds. So whether it's viewed primarily as a handheld or a console is a moot point for me in discussions of generation.

With regard to product strategy or market placement, no, probably not. It could (probably?) be disqualified on the basis of distributing software on physical media, and not exclusively through an app store.ElkinFencer10 wrote:I definitely don't think it's fair to call the Switch a microconsole.
Hardware-wise though, that is what it bears the most resemblance to. The Shield Tablet and TV run very similar hardware (the Shield TV is also Tegra X1 based, albeit clocked higher). Other chips in the Tegra series powered the Ouya and the Mad Catz Mojo, for instance, along with lots of Android tablets.

Using the fan translation is precisely what I hope they did, assuming this turns out to be true. Their work on the game was fantastic.MrPopo wrote:That would be all kinds of awesome, and given they did give us Earthbound Beginnings it's not completely out of the question.
