This place is still a wonderful resource for Dreamcast info, via some of its members like Blu, myself and a few other wonderful folks (you know who you are lol!) Who truly have a passion for the topic.
I'll admit. I'm not as active here or even in the hobby as I once was. But I still have a lot of adoration for Dreamcast.
How is your Dreamcast gaming going on?
Re: How is your Dreamcast gaming going on?
Haha yeah that is exactly how I feel about Space Channel 5. I'm not great at rhythm games as it is, but that game is just impossible and frustrating as hell! I don't get it.Tanooki wrote: So I tried out Space Channel 5 for the first time a few hours ago, started to get a bit infuriating. It's like this really fucked up version of Simon and I can't always remember the moves once it's like over 7-8 of them. That's rarely the issue, but what gets me is that there are no prompts, NOTHING for when you have to tap out a sequence. I can recall the pattern but I still get groans and many misses as it's like anally retentive about timing. I know the game had a sequel, going to look it up and see if they fixed that crap as it may explain why the game usually sat and still does sit in the $5-10 bin.
And no, they didn't fix it in the sequel. I've got the sequel and I can't even get past the tutorial segment in the opening level haha.

I'm the opposite, I went into Space Channel 5 fully expecting to be destroyed because people told me how hard it is and I had a really pleasant time breezing through it. It only got tough near the end for me.
I've read that it's difficult for people to remember more than 7 items in a sequence at one time so it is kind of evil when they go over 7.

It's mostly just the rhythm for me. I can't work it out most the time. I think I get the rhythm right, but the game is just like "nah, you suck". The memorisation does seem evil too though.

That's my issue, I guess I can't hear the beat since those bastards put no visual indicator in there like any other timing based music game on consoles have basically always had. I love the atmosphere and weirdness, but not being able to feel out when to hit the button sucks.
Wanted to play more today but had a goodwill find I put in that other find thread on the board for stupid low money and cleaning/testing stuff ate my afternoon/evening up enough. Did end up on the side though of that find with another dc controller+vmu combo for $8 again (same place, left it there 4-5 days and no one bought the 2nd set so I did.) Also a nice Grandia II perfect guide for when I start that one up eventually.

My recommendation for playing Space Channel 5 us to literally dance to the music. Move your body left and right to the music and say aloud the prompts and you would be surprised how dramatically your performance is.
I didn't experience any issues with the lack of prompts because for whatever reason I naturally understood when to input the commands.
Maybe try thinking of the commands as lyrics to the song.

Hey I'm curious. I know all of you have been encouraging me to buy some clamshells, some high ball certain CDs, and so on to make just Propeller Arena, Half Life, and Rez.
I was poking on ebay as usual lately and saw a copy of Cotton pop up, realized it was a reproduction but it looked oddly too good. Seems there's a unique one on there who prices them at $25obo and he uses some excellent equipment. Highest quality CDs, art he uses the Sega technique(or excellent knockoff) to press matching art to the disc top itself (no dumb stickers and it's smudge and water proof), and uses high end photo paper to match what Sega did at 3000dpi quality. I'm looking at Cotton vs the legit Cotton and it's negligible in difference.
I'm tempted to see if he can do (as he said he would do requests) the Capcom Fighting Collection (has SSF2X, SF3 3rd Strike, MvsC, CapcomvsSNk2, Puzzle Fighter, some added audio fluff and oddly Ikaruga(bonus!) http://www.theisozone.com/downloads/dre ... tion-disc/
I wrote him to see what kind of bundle I could get if it could do that one. Sure it'll cost a bit, but when I figure the fact I'll never be able to silk screen 1:1 disc art to the top, nor can I do a 3000dpi quality print out, and I'd have to buy some jewel cases, the discs too. Perhaps this is a better route as I don't want a stack of burns, just imports I can't get otherwise and those are the few I mostly really would care for anyway.
Here's the link to Rainbow Cotton if anyone cares to see what I mean: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rainbow-Cotton- ... 2408092398
And a legit one to compare it:

He's good, very good.

Can't tell anymore if it was the same guy in this thread.

They do look nice for repros. I just print off the og cd art on a label maker I use for work for some of mine and leave it at that.

I have repros of Half Life and Propeller Arena that were made by a guy in the UK and they're very nice and very official looking. The instruction manuals are very amateur though, but oh well.

Re: How is your Dreamcast gaming going on?
stickem I doubt it as that account has been active for 2 1/2 years with a solid record. All I know is from appearances and writings I come across his stuff is as good as it gets without being from 1999-2000s which says he has some really good equipment and supplies.
Normally would not consider this, but given the cost involved trying to make my own with discs, disc loss, time involved, buying jewel cases, running my comparatively crap quality CD label stickers and far lower DPI print out for the case it seems like a decent trade off.
